I used the same brand primer and clear coat as well. For the silver I used krylon products all the way around, just stuff I picked up from wally world.

I've done several guitars with it , spray, clear coat , 800 sand, clear coat again, sand again (1200) and polishing compound it to finish. |

| | | Can't find any pics of it fully assembled, but here's a mock-up pic of a MIM j-bass I refinished in ReRanch Sonic Blue. Was originally Midnight Blue I believe. I used Zinsser white for primer. |

I decided to just throw a coat on there without sanding because I looked at the finish and figured there's probably about 8,000 layers of varnish to try and cut through. I kept looking at the bass...and then the can of spraypaint...and the bass...and the can of spraypaint...and I finally went, "It's warmer out than usual, my roommate's out of town for a week, I can open the windows and get this done without too much trouble." So here it is so far. I'm going to keep the slight black edge and if I like the quality of this paint, I might actually get a slightly different color and try to do a sort of gradient effect (art school grad ). The clear coat STINKS, oh my god!!! But, we'll see how it goes. The only question mark with this brand of paint is that it seems to have a matte quality. It also seems to go on pretty solid and heavy though.
Edit: here's another shot!

I originally started off just by routing in P2-sized pickups and preamp replacement (Audere Classic 4-band), but since it was beat up and I didn't care for the original color so much (green-blue burst on the flamed maple top only; the rest of the body was natural and looked pretty hum-drum). The neck also needed to be refinished (sanded down the finsih and dings, and applied 10 layers of tung oil).
Sanded the body, stain, apply the rattle-can black for the burst and the back of the bass, and then seal it up with some rattle-can clear.
The pickups have been changed to Delano's (which have some incredible aggressive mids!), and now the bass is my number 1.

The solids are cool and there are some very professional looking paint jobs on this thread but that flame... And that clear... Man, it looks like it's a mile deep!

What brand clear has worked out the best for you guys? In the past I've tryed a few different clears but didn't get the best results. Could be that I got too excited and did a half ass sanding and polishing job.
