Recommendation for Strings for a Guild B302 Fretless
It was not that long ago that I had my 1979 Guild B302-Fretless in the shop for some relatively minor maintenance. This bass had not seen a luthier in years and the biggest part was having the fretboard sanded and leveled. I can't remember what strings had been on it, but I just took them off again because a new pickguard is coming as the old one finally broke completely at the jack.
I am going to order some new strings. Lets say price is not an issue. I had played mainly half-rounds on this bass prior but this time around I want to go with the most finger-friendly, 'soft', pliable strings I can find. I want high quality. Should I go with Nylon tapes? I am not trying to achieve any special sound but I do like lots of 'note bloom' for a fretless if that makes any sense. I have plenty of roundwound fretted basses, so this one can be a one trick pony so to speak. My luthier, who is generally to busy and grizzled to say much, commented on how special he thought this particular Bass was. I was kinda shocked, thinking to myself 'well by gosh this one must be a keeper then'. What do you guys recommend. My first idea starts with Rotosound Nylon RS88LD, and at 30 bucks seems cheap. I could go much more expensive. I subscribe to the James Jamerson school of string changery, as I only change strings when they break (rarely) or at opportunities like the one I have now. Throw me some ideas and comments. Thanks folks.
