Reducing J-bass weight?

I have an MM/J that weighs in at just over 10 lbs and I want to make it lighter. I know I could put a lighter bridge on it and tuners might help (but probably not enough to make it worth the expense).

What about routing out extra wood under the pickguard? It's a cheap bass so I'm not worried about ruining the value. Would this work?

Actually tuners are a good swap because it improves neck dive but maybe that's not a problem you're having!

The electronics and pickups are surely all the same weight as replacements. It must be the body causing this issue. I'd sell the bass rather than route out underneath the pickguard and get a lighter bass if it's a problem.

And it would be too heavy for me now I've got used to 8lb basses.

Finally the wood maybe has a lot of moisture still. The old thin coatings used to wear away and then the body has a chance to dry out and presumably lose weight.
