Here's the bass in question. It's the back that's all chewed up...

Thanks for the opinions - I appreciate it!
The very idea of refinishing that bass is completely insane. Particularly considering that by now everyone should know what a bad idea that is. Your "knowledgeable" friend is actually the exact opposite of knowledgeable.

This is now firmly established.

The OP should provide us with a picture of this meatstick so we can roundly dis him and subject him to the ignominy of hostile (and hilarious) PhotoShopping.

You know I'm right!

Thats a sweet looking bass, honestly Id be keeping my eyes out for a correct pickguard. That way when you sell it it can be put back to 100% all stock '73 with the exception of the minor routing and a brass nut. The nut isnt a huge deal as they wear out eventually. If I bought i would have a tech make a nice new nut and put it back to original, that bass is currently gaining value as the market pretty much hit its lowest point, IMO at least.

I'd leave it too...and I am a neat & clean finish freak.

If you want that slick & cool new tone, buy a new Precision. Fender's makin' 'em very nicely these days.

Why do people always seem to read only part of op? He never has any intention of selling it. That said, DO NOT REFINISH! And your friend is very knowledgable in how to ruin a beautiful bass.

Wow, the OP's burst has more black on it than I've ever seen on a 70's Fender! Cool!

Good eye, I noticed the upper horn doesn't show any red. Could be the camera angle and lighting?

I know you don't intend to sell it, but one never knows. Clearly a refine would reduce the value. It's a beautiful bass as is.
