In a research mode...ready to get an SX

Am I wrong, or do SX basses appear to be a decent value for the price? Sure, I don't expect them to be the quality of a more expensive bass, but it seems that the core components are there. By that I mean alder body and maple neck. I think I'm going to get one of them to see if it can be "massaged" into a better instrument. Any thoughts? Am I flogging a dead horse?

There's so much on TB about this...generally, the consensus is that they're good instruments, and a great platform for modding.

with that in mind...let's close this thread

Sorry TBers...I don't want to waste anyone's time.

Meh, don't worry about it. Anyway, I had an Ursa 1, and IMO, it didn't really need much if any modding at all, it was pretty much a decent bass stock. It wasn't perfect , but it was amazingly good considering it only cost me $110. It of course needed a proper setup, but it wasn't anything major, just some minor tweaking. As far as I could tell, it only had one high fret that I fixed by gently tapping it back in place.
It needed shielding. I thought the pickup sounded teriffic, though I might have replaced the wiring, it was kinda cheap looking but it worked. Bridge and tuners were indeed cheap, but they worked as they were supposed to.
Overall it played wonderfully and sounded great, I even liked the way they did the burst finish, it looked like a vintage two tone burst even tho it was supposed to be 3TS. Even if I had thought to spend about two hundred bucks upgrading it (which I felt it didn't need) , it would still have been a bargain.

Thanks, C. Linton! I appreciate your input.

Sorry, don't take my post the wrong way. Basically as C. Linton said, they're an excellent value and don't typically need work out of the box. My SX feels like a more solid instrument than my Squier VM Jazz. Are there things I would upgrade? Sure, but not too many, and it would be the same way with an instrument two to three times the price.

Is there a particular model you're thinking of?

Good luck! :)

Say wait a minute! I don't see any SX 6ers on that couch!

Yes, I know they don't come in that color (yet) but hey, that's what paint shops are for! :hiding:

Ah shush.

I've noticed that whilst miserable buggers gripe about this kind of thread, they're also the type with the most replies - because they're the most fun to read/answer.

Thanks everyone for your opinions. I appreciate it. So far, I haven't picked out the model yet. It will probably one of the Jazz styles with a maple neck. I'll post some photos when I decide to get it.

Wish they'd come out with that LPB in matching headstock again.
