For me palm muting is about slightly decreasing the ring on the string. The bridge is where I can do that with control. When I palm mute away from the bridge it makes the string go dead, but at the bridge I can firmly place my hand there and get the tone I am looking for. That doesn't work anywhere else.

This is what it is for me, but apparently muting is different things to different people.
