Ric O sound with effects units

Hey all,

I may be acquiring a rick 4003 for the first time in the near future but after doing some research on the awesomeness of the ric o sound feature it got me thinking how using it with effects units would work?

I understand that from the bass using a Y-cable into two amps or in my case a single SVT-VR (dual channel) you can use each channel for each pickup, but how would one go about factoring in the effects units between the bass and the amp? I only use an mxr M80 and a micro synth pedal (as a fuzz/octave) so using only one pedal for the effects would be a good move too to maintain low end from the clean pickup, just wondering if any of you guys out there have devised a cunning plan on how to do it?

nevermind everyone, i found the monster cable stereo Y which solves that problem completely.

Doesn't the Y cable defeat the purpose of Ric-O-Sound? Unless I'm picturing a different cable in my head...

No... The cable is stereo jack to 2 monos....

I haven't done this in a while, but I had great results keeping the neck pickup clean and sending bridge pickup through a bassballs.

I also tried one pickup straight into my Mesa Bass 400+ and the other through a vt bass.

It's fun to mess around with the rick-o-sound.

What would the signal chain look like in this case? With effects...

If you plug the mono ends into the bass, the stereo end will still go to mono effects.

If you plug the stereo end into the bass, one mono end would go to the effects chain and the other to input 2 on the amp. Not much different than using two cables.

You can't use both jacks at the same time.

On Ric-O-Sound, Standard (Mono) out = both pickups combined into one mono cable. Plugging the stereo end of the cable into this jack will give you only one pickup.

Stereo out = neck pickup goes out to one side of the stereo cable, bridge pickup out to the other side of the stereo cable. A mono cable will not work in this jack. Stereo out will only send neck to one channel, bridge to the other - dual mono signals with both pickups in each side is not possible through the stereo jack.

Okay, got it. I've never used the Ric-O-Sound on my Ric...obviously

As mentioned, if you use the stereo "Ric-o-sound" jack, either with a male stereo to two mono females or the Ric-o-sound box, you'll in essence have two mono cables, one for neck pup and one for treble. You'd use use two amps and color each output with their own effects, if needed.

In thinking about it, I'd rather go with the Ric-o-sound box or a long legged stereo to mono cable since I would not want to lug around two cables hanging off a short Y connection from my instrument. Something to think about.

While I've never used this feature either, I find the possibilities are quite intriguing.

It's an extremely fun feature to play around with. I have a homemade Ric-o-sound box, so single cable from guitar into the box, two mono cables exiting the box. One to each amp. I sometimes run the neck pup dry with the bridge pickup having effects, other times I put different effects on each pup signal. So much possibility.

You can easily build your own splitter box using a stereo cord, two mono cords, good quality jacks, and an appropriately sized box.
Works exactly the same as the now discontinued RoS box. There is nothing inside it other than wire and Switchcraft jacks.

I had built mine to replicate the RoS box : stereo cord hard wired to the box, and two mono out jacks in the box, although you could really use any variation that suits your purpose.
