Ooh, excellent fodder for horseshoes for a bass!

Love those lapsteels; I keep thinking of getting one but then I'd have to learn how to play it well.

I've had this 12 years now and still don't play very well but it sure is a fun toy. Not too hard to get decent enough pretty quicky to add some texture and slide licks to blues and country jams but I think it would take some time and committment to get really good. Get one or make one today! You won't regret it.

Sad but true, lots get canabalized for such. Apparently, the steel used back then held onto its magnetism quite well.

And I thought it was pretty obvious that his diagrams were exaggerated, definitely not to be taken as literal examples.
I've only seen one pic that was even close, that was an extreme case of a black finish tail bent almost at 90 degrees.

My 1976 and 1981 basses have lift around 1/16" and are perfectly stable.
My Jan. 2010 4003 has maybe 1/64", I read that the underside of the tail has been redesigned to be stiffer, but haven't actually taken mine off to look.

Also I find the RIC strings to have less overall tension than many medium nickel round sets, which I have used since switching from flats back in late 1986.

So obviously my '76 4000 has been wearing medium rounds for 26 years with no ill effect, it's never been stored detuned, always left at concert pitch in it's case.

That's not to say that there aren't weak tailpieces, most of us know that the black finished pieces were abnormally susceptible to bending due most likely to their finishing process.

Some of the standard chromed pieces seem to fail also, who knows why.
There's never been any real study done on the subject.

...and likewise my 2001 only has some very minor lift and my 2011 has none or at least none worth talking about.

In action at a pre Halloween party. I only used the bridge pickup the whole night and it sounded awesome. It has totally replaced my P basses i didn't even take another bass to the show.

Ric & Ampeg is a sure thing! I have Mesa cabs but it is an SVT6-pro driving them.
