i finally learned how to set the thing up myself as well rather than take it to a tech. there's a special feeling about learning to set up your own gear just how you like it.

Just put in my order to Wildwood guitars for a new Ruby Red Rickenbacker 4003. It should be here by the end of the week.

I would have done this also, but their big D neck profile is too much for me

I hear you. The neck is certainly unique, but I've always liked them, in their various forms. I have issues with playing certain basses and I find the meatier necks are way more comfortable for me.

You know what you could do is try to find a 90's Ric. I had one made in 92' and the neck was incredible on it. Slimmer shaping made it extremely comfortable. I can't guarantee they are all like this, but they seem to go through phases.

I've talked about this here and in my NBD thread, but the neck is a mystery to me. I am not usually fond of heftier necks (I'm mostly a Jazz Bass guy). But this neck feels comfortable to me.

I'm done trying to understand what my left hand wants.

Yeah I tend to prefer jazz necks as well, but find the Ric to be more comfortable to play in most cases. It's strange.

My 4003 is here! It's awesome, light with a nice neck profile.

I just plugged it in and went through the motions. The bridge pickup sounds very weak and thin compared to the neck pickup, even with the push/pull switch. Heck, it doesn't seem to make any difference in tone at all. I'm thinking it's been modded back to the old style specs.

Does anybody have the wiring diagram for the push/pull switch? I want to see if it's wired correctly...

I don't have a diagram but yeah if the push/pull doesn't change the tone and the bridge sounds weak then it must be wired old style. The bridge pu on my 4003 sounds full enough that I solo that pu and don't use the neck pu.

The bridge pup on the 4003 is strong no matter if it is on vintage or modern one. The modern tone is fuller, more lows and low mids, the vintage tone is this aggressive bark of the high mids. Actually on my 4003 I need to put the bridge pup volume on 75% to match the neck pup.

This is because the magnet is bigger on the bridge pickup.

That is, most likely, a scam.

Ya ... it is really strange to see such a rare bass on CL and not ebay and without a price ... The poster may have just lifted that pic from somewhere.

Someone in Cincy should try to see it in person to see if it really exists.

Alternately it's really strange that they would pick such a unique item for a scam...you can't throw a dead cat without hitting fourteen dudes that would jump at a too good to be true Les Paul...but this just seems too...specific...

I guess we could speculate...or I could contact the guy and see...

Certainly could be a scam. I did a Google image search for both pictures in the ad and got no matches.

So what would such a bass be worth? (I'm not in the market, just curious.)

Well, anybody have a link to a wiring diagram so I can at least eliminate something?
