You can play jazz just fine on a Rickenbacker. Chris Brubeck does.

If I were to join a jazz band, I'd use a Rickenbacker and set it to neck pickup only.

Depends on the neck pickup.

Both of mine have toasters in them... which is fine to my ears for jazz too.

I feel the neck pickup on a Rick can get a tone that's actually somewhat upright-ish. Obviously not exactly the same, but a better approximation than tones one can easily get many basses.

^ Neck pickup , play close to the neck pickup , play with fingers , engage the mute system on the bridge.

Rick's have so many tones when you play around with them.

I have a song from my old jazz band where I used just the bridge toaster on my former 4003FL with astonishing results.

Ah, well, I have a fretted 4001, and only have the toaster in neck position.

Hey guys, the only nearby Ric dealer listed on the Ric site, West LA Music Inc, went out of business recently. It seems that the list may not be that updated? Does anyone know of any dealers I can check out that have new Rics shipped in?

I have a 1993 4003s. Last year I modified the neck pup cavity for 1/2" spacing and put in a Toaster. With TI Flats, it is like butter! Now I understand the passion.

I finally had a chance to really take some time and experiment with different settings on my new to me late '84 4003, that I picked up a month or so ago. My go to bass for the last 4 years has been a modded MM Fender Jazz IV. I bought it for the feel of the neck, added DP123's TI flats and a J-retro pre. I've always been a Fender guy. But I have to say. This Ric is pretty darn sweet. Great sustain. The versatility in tone is amazing. I am not experiencing the "hum" with different volume setting with the neck and bridge pickups. It's actually very quiet. The neck is also very comfortable. In fact I like it more than my Fender Jazz's from the 7th fret up. It's was strung with roto 77's when I got it. I was thinking about getting a set of TI flats for it. But I'm keeping rounds on it after last night. So I guess what I'm saying is I love this Ric. A bit of tweeking and it'll be perfect. I'll have to post a pic of it one of these days. After 40 some years of playing. I'm glad I finally added a Ric to the herd.

Anyone else think this is weird? I mean, why would they be selling them?

The singer from my old band's pa had a Ric that he let me play a couple times. Holy cow did I fall in love. I keep hoping that one day I'll be able to justify the cost.

armybass, nice collection. I too have a 330 in the mix, but sadly, no longer own the 620 and 620/12 I had a few yrs back. Still, the 330 is awesome, mine's a Ruby. Lovin' your Mapleglo as well.
