I'm still curious about the 86' though. | My Silver '86 4003 is the best playing Rick I've ever had my grubbies on bar none. As to a resonable price I have no idea really.

Does anybody have any incite on the older models? Are the newer ones just that much better?

Really I have no idea as I have only played 4 ric's my whole life. |

All are very different and no two play or sound exactly the same. I love them all for that exact fact. It's like having a framing hammer, an sledge hammer, a ball peen hammer, and a tack hammer. While you could use one for any task, it's nicer to have an assortment to do different tasks with.
One of my favorites is my 2011 4003. The neck is the newer two piece style that is shallow D shaped. Plays like a dream. From a playability standpoint, my second favorite is my 86 Shadow. Very slim neck, plays very well, holds a set up like granite and growls like an underfed junkyard dog!.
IMHO, RIC really got it right with the new two piece necks. My 2012 4004 has the exact same neck only the fretboard is ebony.

Early last week, a friend let me borrow his 4003 (blue boy) for a couple of days. I returned it to him, then almost immediately placed an order for a 2012 ruby red 4003. It's on a UPS truck now. (In my mind's eye, the truck is surrounded by a police escort, lights flashing.)
Yeah, I'm excited. Will be coming back for a number. | Wait until you see the Ruby in your hands. Killer color.

As many times as I've ordered gear with UPS shipment, I never knew until now that I didn't have to wait till the end of the day for delivery. With the driver's cell phone number, which my friend has, I can arrange a meet in the morning. Hahaha. I don't want to wait an hour longer than I have to.

I'm all out of sacrifical goats. | Try young nubiles, then if you don't have any goats.

This past weekend,I finally had the oportunity to check out some brand spanking new Rics at Apple Music in Portland. (Check it out A-step!)
The new 2 piece neck profile to me was much more rounded and c shaped than any of my Rics,a nice feeling profile to be sure. They have a ruby 4003 which is absolutely spectacular in person. I also loved a transred cii,and a very purple transblue cii, both were nothing short of incredible looking. The neck profile on the cii's felt identical to the 4003's,so that might be an incentive for folks who have found them too chunky/wide in the past. I actually like my '04 model laredo and cii's neck, they are wide but shallow. |

Here's a mojo shot: | You need to use this bass more - hardly any wear....

Without playing one in person, how can anyone tell what their getting ? |

In fact, every dealer I previously asked about a 2012 ruby red 4003 has said the same. I'll report back after the bass comes.

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Dec 2007 Location: Oregon coast | | | I could be wrong,:-/,but i do think Ric is constantly tweaking their designs with every batch of basses they put out. At least, the variation in neck profiles seems to point in that direction. And i was wondering about something... the new 4003's body binding/edge seemed somewhat contoured along the top edge,or at least not as sharply flat as i remembered experiencing on past models. Is this possibly a new design tweak? | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
