It was probably about 4-5 years after that when I had my own radio in my room. The radio station I listened to was on the AM band but very frequently as I was in bed going to sleep these wonderful sounds would come from that radio. I did not have an awareness of the band or song at the time but later came to realize that this song was in fact "Watcher of the skies." I never did see Genesis with Gabriel as front man in person but in the early 90's I had my first experience seeing "The Musical Box" which is a band out of Montreal that recreates Genesis shows. Note for note, cut for cut and even word for word of Peter's between song stories. With full costumes, set and scenery. It is quite an experience. They used to tour as a 7piece band because their intent was to play per the album version of a tune which was not possible with only 5 musicians. Now the just play with the 5 piece.
The first show I saw was their recreation of "Selling England By The Pound". It blew me away. I've seen that show several times now. They are the only band who Genesis officially licensed to do the Lamb and Genesis even provided copies of all the slides used as background in the show. Phil Collins sat in on drums for an encore once.
They use all authentic instruments too. Even the correct Ric's for Mike. If you ever get a chance, see them.

| | Walter Woods or Aguilar to LDS - the best! | | Join Date: Apr 2006 Location: NE Ohio | | I saw Genesis every time they came to town, at least once a year, if not more, from that first show up through the Wind & Wuthering tour, in a huge shed in '77. Most of the shows I saw were un small theatres, the largest holding 3000 people, which is where I saw The Lamb... tour and both nights of the Trick Of The Tail show, with the wonderful Bill Bruford playing along with Phil What a great double drum "solo" they did together; I even have a recording of the second night that was broadcast on WMMS live during the show (my brother taped it, at home).
Re: The Musical Box, I saw them a few years ago doing the SEBTP and Foxtrot albums. For a person who has never seen the real Genesis, they are a good replica, however, to me, they were just a theatre show, it did not truly compare to Genesis at their peak, with Gabriel in the band. I had a very difficult time getting past the Rutherford "actor" as he was a lefty, and his Ricks were not really all that accurate, even getting past that they were lefty instruments. Nice try on the Dick Knight doubleneck copy but there were quite a few things wrong with it that I noted at the time, I have seen the real one pretty close up a few times and I have some photos that a photographer I know made during the SEBTP show at the Allen Theatre. I was in the third row!
The Musical Box is better than the other tribute band I saw, Over The Garden Wall, which did not do as complete a show regarding the staging/lighting/instruments/multimedia aspect. This was almost 20 years ago so I can't recall them musically, so no comment there.
Regardless, it is great that you are into Genesis so much. They were as unique as any band could have been, especially during an era of music and tours that included bands such as Yes and Kiss (not my cup of tea). During that time I saw Yes a few times, Pink Floyd on the Dark Side Of The Moon tour, Renaissance, Gentle Giant, Rick Wakeman, Gryphon, Brand X (a couple times, along with scores of other great bands). Ticket prices were real cheap back then!

I've seen every Genesis show since the "Three Sides Live" tour in Toronto when they did play Supper's Ready in it's entirety for the first time in many years. Supper's Ready is my personal "happy song.". At that show I had not heard it before as I'd only been exposed to Duke & ATTWT. But we knew it was a big deal that it was being played. They had not played it on that tour until Toronto.
Closest I got to the band was on the Mama tour. They played 2 nights in Toronto. I had tickets the first night. I got invited the second night by an ex GF. Her seats were first row behind the stage (hockey arena) so we saw the entire show looking over Tony's shoulder. It was pretty special for me.Phil was to my left Nd damn near eye level during "In the Cage."
I'm also a fan of Yes and other great prog rock. Music that has more.

Genesis and Rutherford and later Yes and Squire were my reason to want to play the bass, and even more dreaming of a Rick. I love Rutherfords playing, through all the Genesis years. My absolute most favorite Genesis part is the instrumental bit leading into the guitar solo of Firth of the fifth on the years were Daryl play the guitar and mike the bass. The drums with Phil and Chester and Mike on the bass, wow. Mike always plays tasty bass parts, and many parts are very demanding. Mike is rock solid, I have the DVD from the last tour, When In Rome. Mike plays many old songs there, and he is in great shape. The only thing I miss is his double neck Rick! |

"Vintage" models have been available for several decades. These are simply 4003 chassis with vintage looking appointments such as no binding, dot position markers and reissued vintage pickups. Currently, vintage models are on haitus but will likely reappear in the next few years. Vintage models have included the 4003SB, 4001V63, 4001C64, and 4001C64S.

I actually think that I like Mike's tone from the Shergold era more than the 'Ric era, BUT that could be due to superior recording technology.
For a substitute, I have been dialing in a pretty darned close-sounding tone with a MusicMan Bongo Twin Humbucker (the same PuP arrangement as the Shergold). Both the Shergold AND Bongo are noted for their amazing ability to dial in custom tonal settings, so it will 'do' for the moment.
As for Genesis in general, I was a typical 12-year old kid listening to Top 40 hits until my Dad (born in 1955) intoduced me to Genesis! I became 'in love' immediately and the honeymoon has never faded once since. If I get 'sick' of one album, I just rotate to another one that I had gotten sick of years ago.
I honestly think that Mike Rutherford's bass-line COMPOSITION skills are the best in the bass-playing world. Yes...yes...another "Greatest Bassist" claim. BUT I am just claiming he is the best bass-line COMPOSER.
I mean, listen to tunes like "Time Table", "Visions of Angels", "Seven Stones", and "Mad Man Moon". NONE of them are particularly fast, showy, etc. But Mike was able to nearly flawlessly blend together the rather complex harmonic structure (laid down by Banks and Rutherford on guitar often) with the beautiful Collins-made rhythms. He is not just hammering on and off- root-octave-root-fifth-octave, etc.
No, he uses things like the fourth, sixth, and seventh degrees of the scales and the various chordal tones and seemlessly glides through them in a very memorable way.
And don't even get me started on his TECHNICAL prowess too. He may not be [insert TalkBass' general favorite bass tech master like Wooten] in terms of dexterity, but since he is equipped with the ability to navigate chord progressions like I described above, THAT translates into his 'fast' playing too.
Examples include: "Watcher of the Skies", "Return of the Giant Hogweed", "Robbery, Assualt, & Battery", and my all-time favorite "The Lady Lies".
Gosh. I know this is a thread about Rics, but Rutherford is great! AND so are Rickenbackers. I love setting my 4003 with the neck pickup volume at 100% and tone at 25% with the bridge pickup volume at 70% and tone at 75% and playing along to any early Genesis tune. It just feels SO RIGHT!
PS- The Musical Box is a great tribute/cover band IMO. I have seen them many times and it is about as accurate as you could get now-a-days. Sebastion Lamothe (I believe is his name) even looks like Rutherford and he plays his tunes perfectly. I mean, I am such a weird person that while watching them, in the back of my head I know which parts of which songs have ridiculously complicated and difficult bass-runs, so I focus in on him to see if he nails them. Every time but this one little mistake in one bass run he has NAILED them 100%!

Most people think they just make the 4003/4001 style, but it is not true.
I really, really want to get one of the Laredo/Cheyenne models one day in natural wood high polish. Gosh, those are gorgeous!
