My heart is currently melting. Thank you for the great photos. I certainly wouldn't 'object' to seeing more of the like!

I ordered it right after the 75th. Got it from Old Boise Guitar. The guitarist in the picture has threatened me with painful death if I ever play a gig without it while he's with me.

We had a rehearsal night tonight. As I have been doing lately (as in since it arrived here in early December) I played my newer 4003 MG. At one point a Guitard broke a string. While he was changing it I looked at my bass stand and saw my poor neglected Geddy Lee J sitting there. Decided to put it on and show it some love. Thought it would be natural. Nope. The teeny skinny neck felt small in my hand and the tone sounded like crap!

Put the Ric back on and felt the warm love from it.

In fairness, the amp tone is dialed in to favor the Ric so I forgive the J for sounding flat (and it could probably stand new strings).

As for the neck, I just found that interesting after reading so many threads where some guys say "thick necks" and some say "thin necks." i've now proved to myself it is what you get used to. The Geddy used to feel natural when it was my main player. When I got the Ric I had to work at being comfortable on the neck. Now it feels natural.

It's all about what you get used to.

There is more to it than this, really. There is thickness and then there is width to be considered, too, not to mention the profile of the cross section of the neck (well, I guess I did mention it!). My former '67 4005WB had a neck the same width as a Precision Bass but the thickness was probably close to half that of a typical Precision Bass. Very different feel.

I also own a 4003 FL and a Geddy. While my Geddy was my main bass before, when I got my Rick the Geddy is often left on the wall. At thirst it was due to me wanting very bad to get adapted to the somewhat quirky Rick, thus thick neck with little taper, sharp body due to the binding, pickup cover etc..... But when I've got used to the Rick I started liking the neck, maybe even more then the Geddy! The tone of the Rick is for sure magic. The Rick have this organic and "barky" thing in the hi mids due to the bridge pup (on vintage mode) and lots of creamy lows, due to the neck pup. Bridge pup on modern mode gives nice warm boost of low end end low mids punch, but I seldom use it. The Geddy and the Rick can be amazingly close on recording, when the amp is adjusted in favor of every bass. The Geddy have a bit stronger high's and i find it easier to get more percussive sound out of the Geddy. Btw I do not slap, but by picking with a pick very close to the neck one can get this percussive sound that is very close to slap tone. The Geddy excels there.
I find the Rick to do better regarding OD, where the Rick really excels at giving this amazing crunch tone which is still warm and organic.

Any way, put totally fresh strings on both, and both will sound great. :-)

I love the pic of the mapleglo cii with the chrome hardware! I just got done swapping the gold hardware off my mg cii for the chrome pieces from my fireglo/transred laredo, and both basses really look great! I do wish it were possible to find a gold plexi trc for a reasonalble price, the factory has the white plexi's only at this time.

Is that the new CR then? It looks a lot like the rosewood on my friend's 2007 Jetglo or my 4003FL, except there doesn't seem to be any filler. Otherwise they don't seem that different to me if the bubinga is the grainy type and not the plainer type that has a pinker hue. I'm glad RIC has found a better source for the fingerboards for their purposes though and this does appear to be a more consistently grainy wood, at least how they are using it.

I wonder if 4004Ciis are CR now too? Since they specify bubinga.

Yes it is the new CR.

There is zero of the white filler anywhere on the fingerboard. This one was made in october 2011 , I had a March 2011 and a June 2011 in MID and they both had filler and the board was darker.

I agree with you , its also painful to see the routing that occured as the wood looks beautiful o the back and that big mound of battery compartments takes away from it.

That said with a few other mods I would rock it.

On the Maple-Glo posted above, I LOVE how the frets are so clean and shiny that you can see the reflection of the strings on them! What a beauty!
