Mine's maple. I wouldn't have it any other way. YMMV.

Aesthetic (and personal) more than anything else.

What body finish are you going with?

Before they were discontinued (2003?) I went to great lengths to get a 55-01 Deluxe with a rosewood fingerboard. My order was canceled by Lakland due to the discontinuation of the 55-01D line, but my dealer swapped a rosewood fingerboard neck from another instrument onto mine. I thus have what is probably the "last" 55-01D with a rosewood fingerboard.

Nowadays, I don't think it matters as much as I did then. I love the bass (totally stock), and the neck is great, but I also play an MTD 5er with 35" scale maple neck. It sounds great, too, though is more of an MM-style growl machine due to the pickup and its placement. Both basses have utterly great B strings.

I don't think you can go wrong with either fingerboard. The 55-01 is a great bass, and Lakland has kept refining the electronics. I'm glad to hear the quilted top is back, at least for a while.

Bad pics of mine:

I have one RW and one maple and like them both. My opinion is that maple looks better with the blue body...again, just one opinion.
