Rosewood vs Maple necks

Sign in to disble this ad
What exactly is the tone difference of a rosewood and maple neck?

And while were at it do you prefer a rosewood or maple neck?

None that can confidently pinned to the species. There are too many variables to narrow the source down to maple/rosewood. I think most of the differences ascribed to maple/ rosewood have more to do with the glue joint a rosewood one has that most maples don't have.

I like the kind that are on great sounding basses, so that's rosewood, maple, and ebony. The individual bass is more important than details like this.

One is light the other is dark, and it depends ont he color of the rest of the bass.

IMO maple makes the fretted notes sound brighter and punchier while rosewood tends to have less high end and accentuate the low end more.

I prefer rosewood.

Black blocks and binding look cool on maple, while abalone dots look cool on rosewood.

I can't say that I've ever noticed a sound difference, on bass or guitar. But they do feel different. I prefer maple generally, but not by a great deal.

Can anyone really tell considering all the variables possible, and doesn't this only apply to fretless anyway?

I have, in the past, found maple to sound kinda "clicky". Not sure why; probably my (lack of) technique However, I just acquired a T-40 with maple - my first maple FB I`ve actually owned. After setting up to my liking,= no clicking. In fact, it also seems more resonant than RW and I love the way it feels ! May all be my imagination, may have more to do with the pups, electronics, etc. - comparing a T-40 to Fenders is not exactly an apples-to-apples comparison.

Go with the one that matches the bass the best. I used to only want maple fingerboards on my basses but after having many, many basses I figured out it doesn't make much difference.

I had no preconceived notions several years ago before I joined TB and I preferred maple...thought it sounded brighter...and rosewood warmer. However, it was probably just the basses I was comparing more than actual tonal differences in the wood.

No discernible difference in tone. It's all about the looks.

rosewood looks darker, so it sounds darker. maple is bright, so it sounds brighter.

overall I like the darker one. she's more well-rounded and doesn't snap back as loud...and she' feels good in my hands

Maple fingerboards seem to always have some kinda lacquer on them. I've always liked Rosewood fingerboards more because they are bare wood.

Maple, unless figured, looks lame. All the difference I need to know.
