Sadowsky Modern with Flats?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just curious about this combo.

The Sadowsky Modern is a great bass but it's tone is "unique" to say the least. That "clank/bark" can be hard to tame.

I'm curious about what the tone might be like with Flats and the VTC. Normally, I wouldn't be interested in flats as they would get lost in the mix of what I play. OTOH, I can't imagine this bass getting lost in ANY mix, regardless of strings.

If anyone is playing a Modern with flats, I'd love to hear their thoughts.

I've never tried flats on mine, but the trebly "clank" can easily be reversed with the VTC knob. As for the low-mid "bark", isn't that something you want to keep? If you've never tried one with a VTC knob, that's probably the best way to tame the highs rather than changing to flats since you wouldn't be able to get that zingy hi-fi sound if you ever needed it.

could always try half rounds too. Take that bite off the edge but still retain clarity and brightness

When I had one, I used D'Addario Halfrounds and TI Flats and both sounded amazing with this bass. When you solo the neck pickup it gets fairly close to a Pbass tonally.
