Both are of the modern jazz ilk. Once you get past the nuance, they are probably more similar than different.

The Sadowsky will have a more traditional feel. If you have never played a graphite neck bass, it takes a bit of acclimating to. It's not better or worse, IMO, just different.

The Sadowsky preamp and pickups are unique to Sadowsky basses. Two band boost only. If you like the Sadowsky tone then all is well. I LOVE it.

All Modulus basses have a wonderfully clear and present fundamental to the tone. They tend to be very "quick" in the way the note blooms and stabilizes. It is the nature of the graphite necks, and again IMO, probably the most signature element of the Modulus sound.

The Active/Passive functionality of the Sadowsky, along with the VTC, is a very usable thing. If want the option of getting a quality passive tone, you might favor the Sadowsky.

If the idea of a neck that never moves and can withstand abuse on a whole new level seems attractive, maybe the Modulus is better.

Both will be EXCELLENTLY crafted and very serviceable in most any bass setting. This would absolutely have to be no more than a preference issue. You can't really go wrong with either.

Hey Bubinga

Chasarms is dead on with his description.

I personally have love the dependability and upper-mid definition of graphite a lot. Its quick and what you put in is what you get so I think good technique shines a bit more with it (as does any flaws).

Sadowsky makes a great product (just not a product for me).

You really have to think of what your needs are.

Cheers

ok, I can't wait to hear the comments back on this one ....years ago I traded my Sadowsky Jazz for a Modulus VJ plus cash (to me). I still have my Modulus VJ and I like it better than the Ash/Mpl Sadowsky I had (in terms of feel). I like the neck shape better and I have NEVER had to adjust it. Sounds great for what I do but I also love the Bart/Bart system. That's just it though, for me it's better but for others it would be the Ultimate SIN. The Modulus neck is a little more flat compared to the rounder Sadowsky shape. My Modulus is very lightweight for a Modulus VJ which is rare I think (I have owned 3). Personally, I think the Modulus neck is one of the best jazz necks out there IMO. My Sadowsky was a NY model and had the Sadowsky HB's and pre but to me, the Modulus was worth the trade.

Sadowskys are not magic. I have owned four. Two of them I sold. One I wish I had not. The other I couldn't have been more excited to get the thing out the door.

There are lots of REALLY nice basses out there. I think Sadowsky holds it own against any of them, but I also know that there are plenty of other makers that have equally high standards of quality.

I can certainly see preferring the Modulus. I have owned five Modulus basses. Three Q5s and two Genesis. They are amazing instruments for sure.
