Sadowsky RV5 P/J or RV5 ...what's the diff?

Sign in to disble this ad
Trying to do some homework on RV5 P/J and RV5 - can't seem to find anything that might help me understand the sound differences b/t the two (I get that the pickups are different).

Is one better at some things than the other? Is the P/J more flexible or less flexible because of the mix of PUPs?

Yes, I searched the threads here, although I'm sure this has been discussed before somewhere.

Anybody got some direct experience they can share as to how these differ in sound and capability? The P/J looks impressive, but I've heard some sick sound clips of the RV5.

Thanks!

Unless the RV5 has been fitted with single coil pickups, which would be an after-purchase change or through a request to Sadowsky, the two basses would actually sound fairly similar in active mode with the pan centered. Either is a quite modern sounding bass with the hum-cancelling pickups.

They share the same bridge PU. The only difference is going to be the offset coils of the P design, which do give you a very true old-school P-bass kind of tone when soloed in passive mode. You are also likely to a get a little "thicker" sound with the split P.

I guess it is fair to say the P is a little more diverse. Although, the Sadowsky hum-cancelling J has pretty much defined the Sadowsky sound. Which, in case you haven't heard, is quite highly thought of by many.

If you type in "ed friedland sadowsky pj review" you should get to a series of clips done by the man himself for some bass mag. Very useful I thought. It was for Bass Emporium in fact - i just looked it up.

Thanks for that! As is always the case, Ed's review was very helpful!
