I love looking at all the different collections of peoples' bass collections here. Some are super diverse, some are very monotone, etc. It makes me feel good that mine isn't terribly out of the ordinary.
After being the first and only owner of a 1993 Fender American Jazz bass for 17 years, I got my first American Precision last spring. I have fallen crazy in love with the p-basses as a line after year of saying the neck is too wide and the tone too beefy. Now I have my American p-bass, a MIM fender p that I upgraded the pups with quarter pounders and swapped in a gotoh bridge. I have a beater p-bass that I defretted and just before Christmas I bought myself an American p-bass deluxe. I went from 17 years of jazz basses and others to a full wall in my studio of various p-basses. And seeing that new 60th anniversary one is making me think of adding to the collection!
Just sharing a little of my madness. |

Something about their simplicity is just perfect. I don't have to worry about twiddling with knobs to fit in the mix. I just simply set the tone pot to whatever sound I need for the song and play.
Perhaps the next bass you get should be a single coil P |

Ibanez ATK. two are from 1995 (one fretted, one recently defretted) and a fretted from '07. the two fretted sound very similar, but I use one for a hi-fi tone, and for some tapping (low action, scrunchie etc) and the other fretted is my main player, and I use a slight mid bump on it at all times. the fretless has its own sound anyway. but hey, if you find a comfortable shape, neck profile, string spacing, etc...why change right? ENJOY

I used to just play Rickenbackers ...
I still like my Rics but most of my basses are not Rics these days.

The MIM with quarter pounders sounds different than the American standard which doesn't have the diversity of the American deluxe. So I think maybe it comes down to comfort. Plus, and I firmly believe this, every pbass is very different subtly. When I first got the pbass I fell for, whenever I would go to a guitar shop I'd pick up pbasses expecting that same magic. But some don't have it - even Americans. That's why I bought the MIM I did - modified the bridge and pups - but the feel was there. 25+ years playing bass puts me in that "I know it when I feel it" position I guess. |

Now I don't feel so bad for wanting a 4th Ric. Please pm me if you ever want to sell another one of yours (4-string, that is). |

If something is comfortable for you, and you can embrace the subtle differences, why not go with multiples of it? At least you have a good idea how it's going to feel in your hands when you pick one up at home or in a store. You just have to realize that every bass will have it's own character. And that is part of the fun.
BTW, make mine a p/j.

| Same experience here. Love the Precision bass. But jeez, I love my 2010 Jazz as well. Everyone should have a P, a J and..
a Ric. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
