Saw a vintage Fender Precision at a show this weekend...

I was helping out with the stage set up at our yearly blues fest and the bassist had a gorgeous creamy yellow (Olympic White?) precision. I got a look at the neck plate and noticed the serial number started with 70, it was square with no other markings on it. What year would that make the bass?

Not much info to go by, but serial numbers in the 700,000's are 1976(early '76 I think). I have owned 2 in and around this time period.

PG was black and I think the decal was gold but I'm not sure.

I knew I should have taken some pictures.

Except that a plate with 700,000 serial made in the 70's would also have an "F" logo engraved in it.
He said the plate had no other markings.

I have no idea but I do find it amazing how much knowledge is here on TB.

^ Yup, it could be that too, if what he saw was an original bass.

But with not having any better details or a pic to go by, the OP bass could have been a faux look-a-like for all we know. You can buy faux neck plates with digits stamped on them.

The bass showed wear, though I know this can be faked.

I almost think the serial # was 5 digits.
