Schaller Strap Buttons

Sign in to disble this ad
I noticed that some higher-end basses come with Schaller strap buttons installed, I guess for use with Schaller's strap lock system

I've never used strap locks before in the 23 years I've played and I don't really want to start now

Can those buttons safely accept a strap without Schaller's horseshoe-like other part on the strap end?

Thanks!

My Rickenbacker has the buttons that also work with schaller strap lock and strap works securely with out the locks on it...the flanges on the buttons are large enough to work without the locks...so yes.

I used to always use Schallers, but decided to go the cheap route. I now use the neoprene washers from the hardware store. They cost about .49 cents each. Just put your strap over the button, then put the flexible washer over the strap onto the button. Works like a charm. Just be sure the diameter of the hole in the center of the washer is smaller than the head of the strap button. It'll stretch out over the button, then resume it's shape, thereby keeping the strap from slipping off.

To answer your question, yes, you can use a strap on the Schaller buttons without using the locking mechanism attached to the strap. BUT... Since the Schaller buttons on the bass have a smaller head than older vintage strap buttons, you DO run a bigger risk of the strap slipping off. That's why I'd recommend these neoprene washers if you don't want to use the locks themselves. Here's how it would look:

Agree with Jeff K, Schaller buttons are a bit small without backup. Dunlop makes a "Dual Design" model button to work with a regular strap as well as their end.

+1

Schaller locks are common even with production basses such as Fender. More high-end manufacturers go with Dunlop, which is the superior design by far (IME), and as noted by wr, the Dual Design has a much better button when using an unlocked strap.

I don't trust them..

Dunlop does have a universal plastic locker that's about $2 each

Dunlops baby...light, don't chip your bass when they collide, suitable for normal straps, solid as......big old screws to get in though, if they feel too tight use your existing screws because they can get very stiff and a bit concerning (especially on the upper horn).
