Schecter Diamond P-Custom 5 vs. Ibanez SR-605

So, here's the situation: By way of a contest I'm pretty sure I'm winning at work, I expect to have some money to put toward a bass (and depending on the exact value of the prize, possibly an amp as well). I've been planning to get a Schecter Diamond P-Custom 5 for a while, but I was playing around with an Ibanez SR-605 the other night and I like that as well.

This will be my first bass, and they're fairly different from each other. The Schecter is a fairly straightforward P-bass copy, but with a 35" scale, and a humbucker in the bridge, which is splittable, giving effectively a P/J configuration. It's passive and has an alder body, maple neck, and rosewood fingerboard. There's a volume knob for each pickup, and a tone knob that has the coil split on a push/pull switch.

The Ibanez is a more modern style bass, with two Bartolini soapbar pickups (passive), with an active EQ. 34" scale, ash body, jatoba/bubinga neck, and rosewood fingerboard.

I find the Ibanez slightly easier to play, and I do like that it has the active EQ, but a straightforward passive bass, with a 35" scale length appeals to me.

I've played both basses a few times side by side, and I keep going back and forth on which one I think sounds better, given the same settings through the same amp.

A little background on myself as a player: I've played guitar for almost 11 years, and I mostly play metal. I play a 7-string guitar primarily, and I like a mid-heavy, percussive and punchy tone that leaves plenty of space for the bass to do its job (I use VHT/Fryette and Engl amps). I'm looking for a bass for recording, and possibly playing in a band at some point as well. In general, my preferences with guitar are thicker, wider necks, bolt-on construction, alder body, and a longer-than-normal scale length for 7 and 8-string guitars (mine are 26.5"). I like enough string tension to keep the string from flopping around when I play with a pick, but still light enough to be able to bend and vibrato easily.

I've recently discovered that I sound my best on bass with a pick, rather than my fingers, and I'm looking for a deep and full sort of tone, that's still bright and clear...basically something that would pick up where my guitar leaves off. I realize that this has a lot to do with the amp, and I'm thinking GK MB210, or maybe one of the new Ampeg Portaflex rigs.

I have a Diamond P5 and an Ibanez SR 535, very similar to a 605. When I bought the 535, I was a little disappointed at the wimpiness of the low end even though there was plenty of headroom in the EQ. I replaced the pickups with better Bartolinis, problem solved. I liked the Ibanez's narrow string spacing until...

I played a Diamond P after drooling over one on eBay. Wider string spacing and killer tone. Passive. Best neck ever.

Play what feels right. Either bass is good. I had a Rick for a couple of years, fell in love with a 5 and never picked it up again. I love my Schecter.

After playing them side by side again today, I've decided on the Schecter. Now it's just a question of white or blue. I've never seen the blue in person, and two of my favorite-looking guitars are white with black pickguards, so I'm leaning toward the white.

Well, this is disappointing...it looks like the only way I can get one in white with my employee discount is if I wait until late August, which I really don't want to do. I guess that means it's between black and blue, then...

I had my heart set on black until I played the blue one I ended up purchasing. It's pretty dark, and I've fallen in love with it to the point that I don't regret not waiting for a black one. No buyer's remorse here.

A year or so ago, I decided I wanted a white anything, maybe a Spector (after seeing a Queensryche video on Metal Mania) and bought my Ibanez. Now it looks kind of gaudy, but that may be due to the gold hardware, which the Schecter doesn't have. Make sure you get what you want.

The only improvement I think Schecter could have considered would be a matching headstock in the case of the black or blue models.

I've got two guitars, including the one I designed, that are white with black pickguards, and I love that color scheme.

Immigrant, do you have any pics of your blue one, perhaps some that depict it accurately?

This is as good as I could furnish right now. Bad, dark, cave-like. I'd take a fresher one, but it wouldn't turn out any better.

Does anyone know what the string spacing is on the Custom 5 string?

I measured it the day I bought it. It's either 18 or 19 mm at the bridge, center of string to center of string.

You know age is creeping up on you when even new bifocals can't help you see 18 or 19 mm.

That looks pretty cool, Immigrant. How dark of a blue is it? I've had a hard time telling. Can you compare it to this guitar I have? This is the most accurate representation I have of its color...most pics I've seen of the Schecter in blue make it look a bit darker than this.
