Just bought a Riot Deluxe and am putting up a little blurb on here because there is precious little information out there about this bass and I was not able to actually get my hands on one in any store in the metro area I live in. I purchased a Stiletto Deluxe in 09 which has had and still has some issues. For the same price as the Stiletto Delxue, the Riot Deluxe is a major improvement.
The body is mahogany with a string thru design rather than basswood and I'd say it's a tonal improvement except for too much high end. I have to trim the treble on this one. Body weight is light and well balanced.
The neck is a 3 piece combo of walnut and maple. The woods are so similar in color that you have to look closely to see the sections. This is major improvement since the walnut middle section has a much better grain structure with nice long parallel grains. The neck feels much stronger and is more resistant to intonation variations due to hand pressure than the Stilleto Deluxe's maple only neck which has a lot of swirly and discontinous grain structure. The neck feels ever so slightly thinner than the Stiletto Deluxe neck. Don't be thinking Ibanez. It's not that thin and playable but does seem a little easier to play than its predecessor.
The action is set lower from the factory than previous, especially the B string. I've chosen to leave it alone and heed the advice of my instructor, playing more lightly and taking more of an economy of motion approach to my playing. Depending on your style, you may need to raise the action on this.
This bass comes in black and dark metallic blue which I chose. Go with the black. The blue looks great in pictures but can be downright unattractive in some lighting conditions. I've never once looked at it and been happy with the color.
One thing I love about the Riot Deluxe is that the electronics cavity is properly shielded. I can play with it a foot from my laptop without interference. With the Stilletto Deluxe, I couldn't get within 3 feet of the laptop before massively annoying interference occurred. Yes, I know I could have added foil to the cavity but just never got around to it.
If you like cheap basses, this is not a bad one. Schecter has definitely closed the gap a little between their low end and high end basses. |
