Screw as horn, downsides?

If I want the bass to balance properly, I will need a long horn. What if get rid of horn, but put a long screw in its place? How much would this really reduce weight and how stable would it be? I love the feel of a long horn, but most basses with a long horn that I have played are also really heavy in that area.

Hi.

If the anchor point is in the same spot it's just as stable as it's with the horn.

The closer to the headstock, more stable and vice versa. Obviously.

Long extensions tend to bend though, so perhaps the "Leon Wilkeson horn" would do?

Chambering the body would IMO be a better way to "tune" the balance though.

Yep! This was my solution to uber neck dive on my Carlo Robelli 8 string.

I just used a hollow tube with a super long screw through it, but considering the long lever arm that is holding up the bass, it would be better to do it properly which would be somehow to have a fairly large diameter screw out of the bottom of the brass or aluminum rod that screws into the bass so you don't snap the mounting screw with the weight of the bass. I did go one size larger screw than what came on the straplok and ground down the head so it would fit inside the locking button. Probably takes some thinking which is why I went with the hollow tube. But then I don't play the 8 string much and it's been fine so far.

Basically if you want to get a bass to balance you have to get the upper horn support spot out close to the octave marker on the neck.
