Sei Owners Club

Ok - I sowed the seeds on my build thread. Time to go through with it.

Why should Fenders, Warwicks et al have an owners club and not us exclusive Sei Owners

PM me for a membership number (Numbers 1,2 & 3 reserved for a couple of important owners who helped me in my build - is it you?)

I'm hoping this thread becomes a focal point for all things Sei.

You waiters out there - PM me as well - you can join and place your build stuff in this thread. Only thing is your number will have an appended '(w)' to signify a waiter .

To qualify for membership you must be an owner or waiter and pictures are obligatory - no excuses.

Suppose I have to do this. Fat bloke pulling a silly face with new bass. Taken in the drummers kitchen in the house he'd moved in to 2 days prior. Make sense good

I am extremely pleased and honoured to be given Sei Owners Club #3(w) !!

The (w) suffix to note that I am a waiter, not yet an owner. As I have no pictures so far, I am pleased to post this rendering completed for me by Beavs Graphics.

I echo Paddy's sentiment in hoping that this thread becomes the focus of all things Sei !!

I know the bass is better looking than the owner but you didn't have to point it out. LOL. I tried to pull a stupid face but ended just looking smug and stupid...

It certainly is a great day, It took me two months from my initial discussions with Martin, to actually getting the time to go and order my new bass, it was quite exciting (sad I know).

The hardest part is the waiting, there's still 9 months to go, if the original 10 month estimate is right. Martin said that he might have something to photograph around Christmas time, but it would't be anything more than probably a very rough neck.

Nice flamboyant by the way, they really are fantastic instruments, and to think that they're created in such a small workshop.

Anyone seriously thinking about having a custom bass built, really ought to consider a Sei bass. They're really great blokes as well, when I was there the other week my headless needed a bit of a set up, I couldn't leave it with them, (it's a bit of a trek down to London), they did it while I went off and did a bit of sightseeing, even though they had other jobs on, they did a superb job of dressing the frets.

You can't imagine. It's in the plans for a couple of months now, the only thing that's keeping me from saying I'll definitely get one is that I haven't had the chance to sit down and actually play one yet. I've read some great reviews, but I've also heard some saying "good but there might be better for the money". Don't know... OTOH, even if I don't like the one(s) I try, considering that they are custom made basses then the sound should be completely customizable. I'll order one except if I go there and it doesn't feel right (which I doubt). I'm going for a flamboyant 5, probably headless, maybe fanned fretted, and my tone goal at this moment is a warwick nt growl but more open, even fuller and with more complicated mids (if that makes any sense). One whole day of my trip is already scheduled for talking with Martin.

They've usually got a few used ones in stock that you can try out, at the moment they've got quite a selection.

Hey Dragon.

I'm biased - my Sei is unbelievable, I love it. Can't you tell from the look on my face LOL.

The guys always seem to have some around you are able to try and get a feel for. It's all about horses for courses - my dream bass is another mans plank, if you get there try them. Martin does listen to what your after and tries to give you want your looking for.

He has been scarily accurate in getting my ideal tone from only a few conversations.

If you try one and like the feel then I don't believe you will be dissapointed if you order.

I think the drawback with Sei basses, if it is a drawback, is that you get what you ask for. What I mean by this is that when you sit down with Martin, you need to know the sound in your head that you are after, and that you can express it clearly to Martin. Martin will transcribe your words into the bass so if you haven't told him exactly what you want or are just vague, then I suspect you will be disappointed with the end result.

Those you mention who were disappointed I suspect were not clear enough. The other thing is if you try a 2nd hand Sei you have to remember that it was built to someone elses ear. So whilst you can get a feel of how a Sei bass feels, it's sound might be disappointing to you. I can guarentee that you will not be disappointed by the build quality and finish which I consider will match up to any bass in the world.

I found that it took me a good few months of playing different basses to know what I liked and that I did not before I spoke to Martin. And it took me another few months to play around with my fretless' pre to really get the fretless tone I was after. With my fretted one I am still learning!

One thing that was interesting was that during a discussion with Martin he said that he was not seeking a 'Sei sound' but wanted to give each player the bass and the sound the he was seeking. Which is something few other builders offer.

I would also encourage you to speak to Martin even at this stage about his basses so that any fears you have can be allayed.

Right, now that's out the way

I'm going to scan in and post the sheet Martin gave me that details the settings for the Dip switches on the Schack circuit tomorrow. I haven't played with them yet but knowing my luck I'll lose it!

Actually if you guys want a laugh - I've spent the last couple of days developing my bands website. Still no where near complete but check out www.HugeHenry.com and any feedback would be appreciated.
