Should a 2EQ Ray have unwanted buzz/static?!

Sign in to disble this ad
Long story cut short, I have a new 2EQ Ray (5 months ish old) and Ive noticed everytime you take your fingers off the metal, it buzzes like CRAZY. Put your hands on the metal, it pops and all is fine.

Problem is, its not my wiring. Ive tried all options, all my other basses, SILENCE!

Its been back to the UK imported and its just basically come back exactly the same but with dust on it....apparently they tested it.

Im guessing the bass isnt correctly shielded, or something else isnt right. Im requested a new bass now as Ive messed about a LOT. Its either that or a refund.

Should I expect this noise?!

Definitely should not expect much, if any noise out of it. If you have the treble turned all the way up on either the bass or the amp that could be boosting the noise to an audible level. If that's not the case, contact customer service or return it.

I had the treble on half, through an Orange AD200b which is quite tame in the highs, through a 1x15!

So, yep, turn the treble up on the bass more, and its even worse.

Im in the UK, so im going to ask for a new bass from the dealer/store or money back.

Oh yes, brand new (been at my home for 5 months). Untouched, VERY pristine.

Nope, you should not have any static or hum noise from the 2 band preamp Stingray. If you notice the sound goes away when you place your palm on the strings you probably have a grounding issue. If this is a brand new bass take or send it back for an exchange. If you can't do that then check the ground wire to see if it's come loose or not in contact with the bridge.
Bottom line, Stingray's are dead quiet when not being played so any static or hum is the sign of something wrong that needs to be fixed.

Yep, thats what I thought. The UK dealer has looked at it, and ive been without this bass for gigging, and they just re soldered the battery compartment!!!

It hasnt stopped the buzz, so now Im now going to be friendly because they have wasted my time.

I have a sterling and a ray. Dead silent even with distortion. Ground wire for sure.

Sounds like bridge grounding, had that experience with my SR.

Also, try plugging the amp into a different wall socket, especially if you're sharing it with other devices with a motor.

Some new basses are strangely noisy...like my Fender Miller. I had to re-rout the grounding wire and add extra shielding, and now it's studio quiet.

Beats me why they sell them defective in the first place, but i guess then you'd pay an extra $500 on the RRP...

Silly question, but why do you play with your hands off the bass?

I've had a bunch of 2eq Musicmans. None of my Rays ever buzzed, but only my old Sabre does buzz. Like you, it only buzzes if my hands arent on it, but I realized at gigs I never take my hands off anything metal on the bass, so it never bothers me.

About that Fender Marcus, that buzzes because Marcus' bass that its based on would also buzz in the same conditions. Single coils!
The Stingray is a hum-BUCKER. The point of the pickup is not to hum. I would certainly have the ground wire that connects to the bridge checked. Its a PITA, you will have to take the bridge off (or a tech will).
OTOH, make sure your amp is grounded. Also try both ON positions if your tube head has 2 "ons".

Re: not touching the strings, I shouldn't have to have the problem! These are cheap basses, and my £120 P bass copy I have around the house is silent. So yes, I expect a quality product.

Tried different mains, different sockets, different amps, and compared it to my Stingray5 HS which is silent even on the S.

It's been back for repair and they haven't repaired it, so I'm losing my temper now.
