Should I Buy this Bass? (Rickenbacker)

Sign in to disble this ad
I found this on my local Craigslist

Rickenbacker 4003 Bass, Midnight Blue. $1800

They're $1300 new on Musician's Friend right now, when I told him this he came down to $850. Is this a good deal? It would still be a really big purchase for me but I've always wanted a blue Ric bass.

If you like the blue color, I'd say it's a helluva deal. Go to ebay, enter Rickenbacker bass, check completed listings and you'll have an idea of what they've been selling for; should ease any doubts that 850 is a great price.

$1300 at MF wasn't a good enough deal for me to get one (that's the normal used price...give or take) but $850? Why are you reading TalkBass and not buying that bass???

Yeah, seriously. Buy it!

I have such bad Rick GAS, and I don't even play 4 strings any more.

That's a ridiculously great deal. Even if you hate it, you could easily get rid of it for about $1300-$1600+ (well, once the MF sale is over, which is a great deal itself).

$850 is BEYOND a "good deal" for that bass. It's a legendary deal, the kind that you can mention every time someone asks you about your bass... "yeah, I picked it up for $850 a few years ago on Craigslist. Not too bad of a deal, I guess."

When I paid $800 for my '78 4001, it was a pretty good deal. In 1996.

The last several years, anything under $1000 for ANY model Ric that isn't beat to hell and back is almost unheard of. A 4001/4003 with a cracked neck and/or completely stripped can still net $800-$1200 in some cases.

If you haven't bought it by now, I will. So get on it!

$850?
DO IT!
It's just over half the normal street price.

I bought a new one (same colour) last March, and it's absolutely great.

If you hate it, you will be able to sell it either locally or here easily at a reasonable price and make a profit.

I saw that on craigs , but then saw the sale at MF and ignored even sending him a offer. He wanted 1800$ , now the ad is down. If you got it for 850$ , i live 20 miles south and i will give you a nice profit if you wanna sell.

Rics don't do anything for me. IMO they are one of the most overrated, over priced basses available (I make that statement after owning some). BUT . . . thousands upon thousands would angrily disagree and because of that their "value" is undeniable.

In this case, it's a no brainer. Especially if its the color you want. If you don't buy it, I may hunt it down, buy it and resell.

Early bird gets the worm . . .

good luck

worst case scenario(as long as it is in good condition) is you get to try it out for a while and likely make a profit if you don't like it and decide to sell. i don't see much in the "cons" column for that price.
