right now I have a warwick streamer LX, and have been GASing about P's, 'Rays and fretless, and can't decide on one.
I'm starting to fall in love with the magic of the P, the passive workhorse that withstands every horror you submit it to and asks for more.
The 'ray gives me one of those heavenly tones that make me drool and drive me apesh*t when playing with the band. It's loud, sounds great, looks great, it's got mojo even when new.
and then comes the fretless. sweet mellow tones perfect for those smooth songs, jams and many more.
the fretless gives me a sound that none of the others can give, but on the other hand I'd just fiddle with it at home, since the tone of a fretted fits better with the band. maybe a fretless and have a fret installed at the bottom of the fretboard?

| | | | I just took possession of a EBMM Stingray. My go to basses have been a '77 Ric 4001 and a MIA P-bass w/ Seymour-Duncan Vintage pickups. Played the Ray last night w/ the guys. I really, really liked it. I mean a lot. I thought that the Ric could cut through the mix but the Ray put her to shame. Wow.
Go with the Ray |

| | | | Your question reminds me of that old chestnut: "Is it faster by plane or New York?"
A P, a fretless, and a 'Ray, aren't even close for comparison!
That said, the 'Ray seems to make you happy and you'd use it in a gigging context. The other two just sound like GAS. |

The other two just sound like GAS. | the P is just pure GAS. the 'Ray I'd use with the band with no issue at all, just some time to get comfortable with the wide fretboard(the wick is narrow, which i prefer) If adding a fret at the bottom of a fretless fretboard could maintain it's mwah factor while adding the snap of slap&pop, the fretless would get a lot of playing, even with the band

| | | | I'd posted before the poll showed up. Looks like the voting so far is leaning on the 'Ray...
Why not just get an SX P as well as the Ray? Won't be much more, and it will help you decide if you want a 'real' P in the future. |

I'll save until I have enough for one of those, of course, I'll spend more or less according with what model of the decided type pleases me more
