Should i get it? Squire Jazz Bass...

Sign in to disble this ad
So, i have a dude offering me a Squire Affinity(i'm assuming) Jazz bass for $90.

My only Jazz style bass is a 5'er, and is active with EMGs...

Should i doooo eeeet?

I have no idea about the year, he says it plays fine but the volume knob is scratchy when it turns.

Are these pups 60's or 70's spaced? Will a MiM Fender pickguard fit on it?

Here's a pic he sent me... FWIW, i honestly do like red basses...

but then again, consider that you may spend a couple hundred bucks fixing this bass up (new pickups, new pickguard, etc) and for a under $300 you could get a squier VM or CV jazz bass...

I have one, in fact, mine is the exact same color as the one in the picture. Mine is in very good shape. $90 is a good deal as long as it is in shape.

I have a CV Jazz that I bought to tinker with. I just put in DiMarzio Ultra Jazz pickups and it sounds fantastic.

Provided the neck is in good shape, there is no reason you should snap it up if for no other reason than to have a cool project bass.

I have no doubt that I'll end up with a ball of money in my Squier, but it will be a great sleeper bass. People will scoff until they hear it shake the room.

doooo eeeet!

If it needs too much work to get it up to your standards, but is otherwise decent, donate it to a kid that needs one.

Where is the fun in that I think tinkering on a new bass is part of the fun!

Assuming it's in good enough shape, Do It!

Never Mind...

Remember though... The Affinitys have an alder body vs the basswood of a CV. This is a consideration for some folks.

If it was a 5-string Affinity Jazz, I'd say jump on it. I replaced mine's pickups, electronics, got a nitro tort pickguard from Jeannies and a replacement bridge (I really hate the Affinity Jazz V bridge).

It's still $170 less than a new vanilla MiM Jazz V. Really happy with it.

In this case, with upgrades, I see it as a wash and you will get a resale value for it than a CV (if you care).

Bob

I hate to pee on your parade, but I'd pass on the Squiers. I bought an Affinity Squier P as my first bass, then wasted more $$$ on trying to upgrade it into a decent bass. I hated the neck so I put an MIM neck on it. The neck pocket was too wide and the bolt holes had to be filled and re-drilled. Same with the pickguard swap, new holes had to drilled, etc. After I got my first Fenders I realized that no matter what I did to it, it never was going to be as good. The reason I keep it is it was my first and I played my first gig with it, otherwise I'd have unloaded it a long time ago!!!

You can do what I've done, pick up a used MIM and then upgrade it as you can afford. I have a 2010 Am. Std. P, but the MIM P is the one I gig with. I put a tort. guard on it with 62 RI p-up, CTS pots, etc. It sounds great and plays nearly as well too. I just picked up a MIM(fretless) Jazz that I'm putting an Allparts maple(fretted) P neck(my preference) on and after I have played it a while I'll decide what p-ups to put in it. Total cost in both basses is about the same as one new MIA Fender and I'm not afraid of taking them into bars, etc.
