Should I refinish my Sub?

I have an White American S.U.B. 4 string active bass. I liked the matte white textured finish at first, but its starting to look a bit bland to me, and its difficult to clean the dirt and funk that gets on the textured finish.

This is the bass.

This is the color I am thinking

What do you guys think?

Leave it alone.

If you have to wreck a bass, use some disposable cheapie, not a decent instrument.

Have you any experience in finishing basses, or even furniture?

You shouldn't be so quick to assume I don't know what I'm doing

These are some instruments I have built and finished.

This red sparkle is the same exact finish in a different color

I have some Idea what I am doing.

You're talking about spending time and money to destroy the market value of an otherwise good bass.

Enda story.

You asked, I told you. You can't handle answers, don't ask.

Wow, It's not like I'm refinishing a 59 P bass man. I bought this bass for $400. Your acting as though I'm commiting some kind of mortal sin just by thinking about this.

Oh and being a total jerk on an internet forum, and being rude to someone you dont know and most likely will never meet doesn't make you look tough or cool. More the opposite

It's your bass, so do what you want with it. Ignore other opinions (even positive ones) and just go with what you want. Your other refinishes look great, and I'm sure this one will turn out the same.

I put up a vote for green sparkle because it will be obnoxious in the most awesome of ways.

It's your bass and your money. If you're planning to keep the bass, go for it. If you're on the fence about whether or not this one stays in your stable, leave it alone.

This is weird. I just bought the exact same bass Saturday night! I even put the same pickguard on it. Don't worry about what jerks have to say, if you can do it, and you wanna do it, do it. Looks like you're able.

I wish I were as able. Unfortunately I'm bringing mine to my mechanic to give it a better paint job.

Here's my to do list for this bass:

Olympic white Paint Job
White pickguard
Status pickup
Aguilar 2Band preamp
Dunlop strap locks
92' rosewood stingray neck (which I have already)

What are your complete plans?

2 Sounds like you really want to do it.

So do it.

Thanks man, Those aren't refinishes, those are just a few of my own builds. Your right though, It doesn't matter what anyone elese thinks. I should just do it and put the progress thread in Luthiers Corner where people are more civil.

Go for it! Certainly looks like you know what you're doing, and that green would look awesome.

Hopkins,

Excellent work! I think your SUB would look great in that green.

Be sure to post pics!

All the best,

Bob

Maybe just get a new pick guard? BTW, you do great work, but I've always loved white.

I have a black SLO Sub 4 that I have been thinking about putting arm and tummy cuts in and refinishing.

I love the bass but the slab body does get uncomfortable.

I have seen a lot of threads on this board about whether or not to customize or modify a bass. When it comes to this specific model of bass, the music man s.u.b. bass, for some reason, this bass SCREAMS Modify, Customize, and Refinish. I say go for it. Some guy had one of these for sale on the classifieds a little while back and he did a tremendous refinish job.
