I agree...the position of added thumbrests just never works for me. I use the edge of the neck p/u on my Jazz.

Traditional placement of the thumbrest serve absolutely no purpose for me, but it gives it that classic look on my p-bass that I love.

Haha ... I'll play along As the pic shows, the "thumbrest" is not exactly essential to my playing. But I agree with you .. it completes the look. Can't remember, but I think my thumbrest is rosewood. I added it to my '09 MIA P-Bass.

Okay, I'm not fooling around with taking pictures and all that, but I recently bought a black Ibby SR300 and wanted a thumbrest but didn't want screw holes. I got a piece of 1/4" black acrylic that was lying around my shop, cut it to fit between my pickups and stuck it on with double-sided carpet tape so it looks like a middle pickup. Works perfect for me.

BTW, *** is up with tradition p-bass thumbrests??. my hand is never anywhere near that position!!

Stupid question here but on the bass above, why is the thumb rest on the bottom of the bass? I have never known why?

I think way back when the electic bass was first invented, many players mainly plucked the string with their thumb. So the "thumbrest" was actually more to anchor the fingers.

The original idea of the P bass was to play it with your thumb and anchor your fingers on rest.

Question: How are the old-school Fender "thumbrests" supposed to work? They seem just about as practical as the "octograb" (or whatever it was called) device on Gibson Blackbirds, which is to say not very practical at all.

This is brilliant! More basses should come with these types of thumbrests stock. I always liked the way some Ibanez basses have pre-grooved thumbrests already in place in the pickup shell. I believe Yamaha has done this, as well.

lol... I've never seen anyone do that. Oh, well. I think some of the earliest Fender ideas were based on how they IMAGINED bass players might like to do it, not having any historical precedent to base their innovations on.

ive seen a bass player play with only his thumb.it was very weird to look at since most of the bass players ive seen play in the ''normal'' way.

but oh boy,you should see the speed he gets with only his thumb.amazin
