lets see where to start
its top heavy, weighs 18 pounds, doest take to well to thin strings, sound isnt usable in a band situation and it doesnt sit well in a recording
why do i keep it around then
i keep it in its case wich has "open incase of zombie apoycolypse"

But I hope to change that soon.

Used to be my main instrument for at least a decade, but now I just bring it along to studio sessions as a backup instrument, and it's been months (possibly even years) since my primary instrument didn't work just fine.
Why do I hang on to it? Because on those rare instances when I do use it, it is still the Best.
Bass.
Ever.
Seriously. |

i still play it once in a while. bought it for $630 in something like 2001, it was my first bass. sold it years later to fund (i think) a carvin, or whatever other bass-related purchase for $600. my mother hunted it down and bought it back, and hid it from me for years, and gave it to me for a highschool graduation present (after i tried tracking it down, not knowing she actually had it in a closet somewhere.)
it's staying with me for good- that story + "first bass" centiment aside- the thing kills.. |

Seriously. | I've noticed that on these forums, that steinbergers get ragged on by people who don't own them, and almost universally praised by people who do-says something about their sound, I guess.

Why don't I play it much? Because I used it as a test bed for converting a bass to fretless and doing a complete lacquer refin. It came out great - wonderful player, super sound - but I don't have much need to play fretless and I have 8+ other basses. However, I have more than 60 hours of work into it spread out over a year, so I'm never letting go of it.

NOW how about the bass I should have never sold? My 1980's hot pink pointy headstock Guild Pilot bass -nice!

Their tone (and especially their look) may not work in every context but I dig 'em.
Anyway, here's the bass I play the least:
Takamine Acoustic. I used to have quite a few more basses but I've downsized to four (the Jazz Deluxe V just got traded for a '75 Jazz RI)
And while I sometimes wish I had a hollowbody (Lakland or Starfire RI), a Wal, an MTD and a Stingray 5, the truth is that these basses all get equal playing time which wasn't the case when I had more.
As for the Takamine, it wouldn't fetch a whole lot if I sold it, it's fun to just pick it up and goof around once and a while and most importantly it has a wonderfully distinctive recorded tone that has come in handy a few times. |

1979 Music Man Sabre - Bass was stolen from me 26 yrs ago, just recovered it Feb '10 from a guy who had it who looked me up on Facebook who knew the bass orginially belonged too me. Unbelievable. Now retired.

The neck on this frankenstein is horrible. The fingerboard is uneven; the only way to make it so it doesn't buzz like crazy is to set up the action really high. Which actually gives a really nice "plunky" tone through the P pickup. Hard as hell to play. Body is a complete POS, neck is horrible also. Hardware is OK, pickups are OK.

It used to be my main instrument but since the arrival of a Celinder and a vintage Fender I just never play it anymore. It's a great instrument, especially with the Nordstrand NJ4s and Aguilar OBP-1 I installed, but I have better instruments. I'll never sell it, though.

I won't sell it though. It has sentimental value. And I hope one day, these Japanese Rick copies will appreciate in monetary value as well. They're getting extremely hard to find.

It's 400 miles away at my son's apartment, but that's only a small reason why I don't play it. It needs some work, and if he's not going to play it, I might just sell it.
The other one is my Magnatone, because the neck has a problem above the 12th fret, and I need to get it worked on. I still take it out to the occasional gig, though.

I did take it to practice a little while back and played it for a few songs. Other than that it sits.
The reason I still keep it around is that my father bought it for me when I was 13.
It's neat to have had something for 32 years.
On the other side of that, I constantly toy with the thought of selling it because it does just sit around unused.
Maybe I'll want to integrate it into what I'm doing later...I just don't know.
