We all have let go of some pretty amazing basses over the years.
I personally deeply regret letting go of my first bass, a 70's fender P.
As well as the pair of early 80's Ricks I sold off for god knows what reason way back when.
And then there was that funky Aluminum neck "tuning fork" Kramer with all the tiny switches that went down the road mid 80's.
More recently since joining talkbass I have been the victim of some serrrrrious G.A.S. pains. Never ending really!
G.A.S has it's goods and bads, like most things in life.
I tend to get bored easily I guess....so I roll basses to obtain others often on a whim. And often with regrets, wishing I thought it out more.
The thrill of finding that needle in the haystack bass you have always had interest in and never tried, is the rush that fuels so many used sales and purchases on here.
Ya gotta love it
I thought I would start this thread to maybe have people post up some pics of the " one that got away" or in many of our cases " the ONE'S that got away".
Feel free to post up some pics of "lost loved ones" and or share some stories.
Here are some pics of a few of the basses I recently let go to obtain others.
I look at the pics now and in many cases say " What was I thinking?"...I want them back!! .....hahahah!!
Oh well life goes on...such is the life of a G.A.S.- SY bass player
All gone but not forgotten

I especially like the Bongo. Personally, I haven't let any of my basses go (I only have two, anyway), but I did sell an American Standard Tele several years back after a neck/shoulder injury stopped me from playing it. Now that I'm feeling well enough to play again, I really miss that one. Oh, well. Life is full of little regrets, eh?

Sold my beloved 1978 4001 w/ bindings for some crappy wood body Steinberger bass. Argghhh... what was I thinking? I've never got over that bass.

I feel the same way about the two early 80's Ricks I let go of...Cannot even remember why I sold them?
I think Bands broke up and I was disgusted and stepped back for awhile...maybe used the dough for Camera gear for my Start up Photography business at that time?
Should have gotten loans and kept the damn basses...hahaha Quote:

| | | "Got away" in the sense that everything was inline for me to buy it and an emergency poked it's ugly head in and stopped it. I almost got myself a Gibson Grabber for an awesome $500 price tag but something came up JUST as I was about to complete the transaction losing it forever :/ I'm not to terribly hurt though, a month later is when I got my hands on my G-3 |

This thread is going to bring back some sad memories!
My biggest regrets of recent memory are my 1979 4001 Mapleglo Fretless, and my 1971 4001 Burgundy just last year. A family emergency forced me to sell.
Also, my first bass, a maple Carlo Robelli Ripper. I've been looking for another since 1978.
Lastly, my second bass, a beautiful early 70's mahogany Ripper.

My problem is that rarely have money for an "extra" bass. I'll keep a fretted and a fretless, and in order to get a new bass, I'll usually have to sell one to get it. I'm primarily a six-string player, so that bass was the victim of that twice as it was never a "main" bass. Fact is that my fretted six can sound quite a bit like it. But it was a very fun bass and I'd still love to just have it around. |
