Show your beater/noodle bass!

I know everyone should have one. The bass you just hang out and grab when you want to noodle.

This bass was left here by a guy that joined the Navy and just said I could have it. It was a mess. Dried out fretboard and you could shoot arrows off the neck. After a couple rounds of tightening the truss rod and oiling up the bridge and fretboard it's a player and sounds great with the passive electronics or unplugged.

Here's mine -

Not 100% complete yet, but it's sole purpose for being built is to take the proverbial "beatings" as mentioned.

"Beater" bass would be the famous "Bender P", which I know I oculd take anywhere and I know I'd never have to worry about it either getting beat up or fitting in:

"Noodle" bass is the Martin BC-40, which I can pull out and play for hours without plugging in:

I bought it used in 1977, after being recruited to play bass in the middle school jazz band. The serial number is 388555. It was red with a racing stripe.

I modded it sometime around 1981. At the time, nobody knew that a post-CBS Fender bass, especially a Mustang, would ever have any value. It was just the cheap end of a cheap product line. And it isn't a good bass. It's top heavy, and has a thin, rubbery tone.

But it's fun for sitting at the couch and playing bebop solos.

Though 1 or 2 come always come out and lay around from time to time, the one that's always around for a quick diddle is this late 80's Kawai KRB105 with a graphite neck. Just a lot of fun.

My "beater" bass. It was a wreck when I first bought it, and now it has EMGs and a BadAss II bridge. This is an older pic.

Man, all of your beater basses are nicer than my "good" basses. What kind of person has a Fender sitting around for the sole purpose of taking beatings?

I don't think anyone here beats their bass. But If I was playing a gig at a questionable place, I'd rather take my '92 Fender Prodigy Frankenbass than my original '72 Fender Precision or Ric 4003.

My "beater" bass is a MIM 60'sRI Jazz. I bought it used from the classifieds here already with some big dings and scratches, and needed a 'cheapie' that I could leave anywhere (especially in my truck) and not care too much about if something happened to it. But turns out it's a killer sounding Jazz!

Yup more of a figure of speach. My "beater" is my main bass. My Geddy!!
