Side Dots

Sign in to disble this ad
My Side Dots on one of my basses (new primary gig bass) are very small and faded. I use these sometimes during certain songs as a referece point. Other than having the inlays redone, any suggestions for something quick and easy that I can put over them to increase visibility when the stage lights are flashing and changing? I was just thinking if there was such a thing as small sticky dots at the local office supply, I could do that. The stock ones are about the size of the head of a pin. Really small. And my eyesight is a factor also. As I get older, things closer are blurry.

They do have dots like that. You can also use dabs of White-Out or glow in the dark paint.

A tiny dab of tippex is probably easiest. You may not even need it on each marker: just one or two to reassure you. Or paint. Depends whether you have office equipment or a small paint-brush lying round the house!

Sharpie is now selling "permanent" markers in silver. That can be seen pretty well, but does wear off.

This was (I guess still is till it's finished) a project bass. Spent alot of time and money on it. Left the neck completely the way it was as it has that cool aged patina to it. Everything else is brand spankin' new gold hardware, pickups, paint, etc. I would probably screw up the neck if I tried paint or whiteout as I'm not a painter. Still leaning towards something I can remove if I don't like it.

You should be able to remove any kind of latex-based paint very easily, as they generally will not sink into the wood grain. The former owner of an Elrick I used to own had placed some nail polish dots on the bass, and I was able to remove them with little effort despite them being on the bass for years.

I'd still opt for sticker dots though just for ease of use.

Stick on glow in the dark dots and stars. I have them. They stayed put for a few months, then time for new ones. But you get a whole bunch. Nice easy, cheap, solution

I used my wife's fingernail polish. Still there after three years.

go to a hardware store and in the towing supplies section or the mailbox section they have super duper reflective tape. It usually comes in red or white. I'm thinking you buy 6x1 inch strip for $2, then make a couple dots and stick them on. You will either see the dots, feel the dots, or get blinded by them, depending on just how reflective "super duper" works out to be!

How about something that can be felt, rather than seen (for those of us who don't watch our hands)? I've been wondering for awhile if there was anything around like Braille (raised dots) that can be applied where it's easy for the thumb to find.

Anything you apply will wear off, or fall off. My dots are hard to see sometimes, too, but I just deal with it.

haha... yeah, I know what your saying. I've been dealing with it on this bass for a while. Sometimes when there is not much light at all live, I've turned my bass face up towards me for a micro second to see where I was headed. Maybe I should wear a Coal Miner helmet or take the shades off.

Paint or stickers never lasted for me.
You can buy different sized dots or a stick of dot material from Stewmac. It really is easy to install if you have a good drill bit selection and patience.

That's what I use. They used to carry 1/16" and 3/32" plastic rods in black and white. I liked the 3/32" because it's much easier to see.

Last time I checked they were metric, and smaller.
