I tried the search & found some info. but I need to Know fersure if my 03 Fender American Std. P in Butterscotch is ash or alder? Anybody want to give me the short answer so I can put the question to bed? BTW 'the search' led me to believe that it is ash.

Looking at a finished guitar, your only clue is the grain. If your Butterxcoth is transparent, you should be able to see the grain. The grain on most Ash bodies looks like Alder on Steroids. Look at several of the raw wood and body supplies, they show the grain of the woods and you can compare that to your own bass.
Here is one you can look at.

I have that exact same thing, except being an '04. And I'm comfortable saying its alder. I'm quite sure the only ash finishes of that period for the American Standards, were Natural, and Sunset Orange.

edit - I don't know if a photo will help, but I'm always up for braggin'....
