The best I've seen is that CB Basses can build you one for right around $2000

Maybe check with some of the guys in the Luthiers forum, see what they can do?

A used R-bass is the best value in single cuts I have ever seen. Hands down.

If you're talking about Tom Clement, his build times generally run 2-3 months +/-. He's a one-man show so it depends on how many orders he has at any given time and how intricate they get.
My Clement is my avatar and mine took a bit longer than that but that's MY fault- it took me forever to pick out a top wood. Everything else fell into place but I was driving him nuts picking out the top.

The man's all aces in my book. He sends you tons of pics during the build process and he involves you as much as possible throughout.
Check out the Clement owner's thread for more pics of his work. I know he's done a bunch of 5 string single cuts over the past couple of years.

I was looking for an inexpensive singlecut 5'er a few years ago. I was looking at a few luthiers who had stuff similar to what I was after. I picked the least expensive and got burned.
If I had to do it over, I would have done a lot more research before handing over any money. I strongly recommend contacting people who have bought and own basses from whoever you decide to go with. Had I taken the time to do it myself, I would have ended up going with Tom Clement. Read through the Clement Club threads. If you like the way he makes his basses you'll be getting a very high quality instrument at a very reasonable price.

It sucks that you got burned on your deal, but thats an excellent reference for Tom.
