I think both basses have the same neck. I also read here on TB that the Ray has the p'up wired parallel while the SB4 is in series, giving it more lo-mids&mids with the eq set flat. I'm not much of a sizzle-head. Anyone strung it with chromes & boosted the treble? What'd it sound like?

Somebody on here (Basswave. maybe?) did the exact same thing with 2 Ray34CA's. I want to say he got the mint green/rosewood and sunburst/maple. Swapped the necks, kept the green/maple and sold the burst/rosewood.

And FYI- if you did that, I'd probably be interested in the black/rosewood 'stealth' bass that resulted!!!

I just checked one of these out at the Local GC and I'm lusting hard for it.

It was one of these:

Needing a 4 banger for standard tunings and it sounded great for $250. Love the black and maple aesthetic.

What is the potential for sourcing aftermarket upgraded parts on these? Specifically the bridge but also Pickups/Electronics and Tuners?

Got a sb4 two weeks ago and the volume pot is already crapping out. Goes from full volume down to half volume. KInda useless. Although it really does sound fantastic. At any price the sound is great. Not happy about the knob situation though. Guess I'll be sending it back to GC.

Will a EBMM pickguard fit these? MF is running a 15% off deal. That would make these 237.15 shipped.

Played one of these at my local guitar center and was amazed. I was thinking about my next bass being my first MIM Precision but now this bass is giving Fender a run for their money. Really hot out put and extremely easy to play.

Worth buying?

So this is definitely worth spending the money on? I'm looking for a more tonally diverse bass, and I'd prefer not spending too much. I've been looking at SRs (the thinner neck appeals to me; small hands), but the SB4 might be worth a shot considering it's so much cheaper. It it as easy to play as the SRs though?

And I'm partial to the green Ray34 myself, but $500 dollars more isn't worth it if the finish is the only real difference...

I have owned an SR305 and an SR500, and currently own a Sterling by Music Man SUB5. If you have smaller hands and like the thin neck, then you probably wouldn't like the SUB series. The neck is thick and feels (to me) like holding a baseball bat (then again, I am playing a 5er). Also, the string spacing took me a while to get used to. However, I think they sound better and have more sizzle than the SR series. YMMV. You should definitely try both out if at all possible.

Okay, thanks for the response! I've already tried an SR600 and I loved it. Haven't tried the SUB4 yet, but I'll definitely go and compare.

I wouldn't really say it's tonally diverse. It def has the music man sound in spades. I love the sound of this bass. If your looking for something that sounds anything like a p bass this is not it. If you like the stingray type sound this is the one.Tone wise I like this better than my ray34. more midrange punch and bite.

I bought Vintage Guy's SUB. I was a little disappointed as I didn't have to set it up in order to play it! I really like it. It's not light but a very good player and it has "that" sound. This one, like the one pictured above doesn't have the control plate or top mounted jack (I prefer it.) When did they changed that? I see myself buying the Walnut finish soon!

I used mine last night at practice (it's always a gig volume affair.) The output was pretty hot. I had to back off the volume to avoid distorting my TC Electronics BH500. I'm used to passive J style basses and this was a completely different voice. Different is good though! Without any playing louder I could hear it better in the mix. It was clean, heavy when I needed it, and quiet. It's an awesome inexpensive bass.

I play with some closed minded gear snobs, and they kept asking me about the bass (they liked it.) I purposely didn't announce I had a different bass when we were starting and sorted kept it away from them. I answered their questions but I didn't dare tell them what they cost new, or that I got it shipped for 200.00.
