have a great time with it.i bought a fretless ric back in 1985 and when i tell people what i have they always say"you have a what".the neck is unlined rosewood and the body is blue with black chrome and black binding.looks awsome, one of a kind.with black tapewound flats on it,it can sound like my precision,or turn up the treble and it has the famous ric sound.

Also a proud owner of a '74 4001 ( With red side markers). Roto 66 stainless steel is definitely the way to go. Blue Steels are real nice too. Joey's Bass Notes is a valuable resource for sure. Don't use the Ric-O- Sound often, but I do have the cables for it. If I had a sweet old Plexi I might use it. lol

Anyway congrats. You gonna dig it bra.

Yay!! Todays the day!! Its gonna be hell waiting for FedEx to come. I got the cables for the Ric-O-Sound and plan to screw around with it but don't see it as being practical for everyday use. Just a nice option to have. But help me out here. I want to run the neck pup to my guitar amp and the bridge to my regular rig, right?

Try both ways, see what you like. I don't use ROS very much, but the few times I did, I liked bridge to a distorted amp, neck to a clean amp.

Ideally, the neck (bass) pickup should go to a bass amp, and the bridge (treble) pickup should go to an amp with brighter sound, then play with the EQ, tone, etc. with each until you get what sounds good to you. So many possibilities!

hope you enjoy that bass lots, my friend! I got my Ric a little over a year ago, and it's my go-to instrument for everything and anything. Hope you enjoy yours as much as I'm enjoying mine!

Stainless steel strings are great for the Squire/Geddy sound, although I'm personally loving Ernie Ball Cobalts at the moment on mine. If you want to do the 'Chris Squire'-style Rick-o-Sound set-up, you'll want to run the bridge pickup to a gritty amp (he used an old Marshall Plexi) while the neck pickup goes to a nice clean and fat bass amp. I've found that backing the volume off the neck p'up by a couple hairs and turning down its tone knob most of the way gets the right blend of amps/tone for Squire. And as nuts as it might seem at the outset, you'll also want to boost the trebles a few notches on the bridge amp; the horseshoe pickup from CS's bass is even more trebly than the now-standard Ric pickups.

So, here she is. I got her from a fellow TB'er and I couldn't be happier!! I can't believe how close to mint this Ric is. I had to have her since she was born the same year as me (1974). I now have my main rock bass. I've been practicing with her for the past week or so and I think its time to do some recording with her. I put some stainless Rotosound rounds on her and I found the rock sound that I have been looking for!! Probably won't run Rick-o-sound into the Tascam yet but it is definately in the future.

Beautiful bass! Remember, you don't have to run the bass in stereo to get that Squire sound - he didn't go stereo until Fragile. He was still using 2 amps before then, but the bass was running mono.

She's sexy! Congrats! I have a 1981 4000, a 1979 4001, and my grandfather, then my dad's, and now my 1968 4001! I love them all!

I noticed this. When I just run mono into my GB rig I still get the sound pretty close. First song I ran through with the Ric was "Heart of the Sunrise". After I got done my girl asked me why my pants were tenting...

A better idea for cabling is a full length stereo cable and a y split back at the amp/pedalboard area. That way, you aren't dragging around 2 cables.

I used D'Addario ProSteels on my Ric...hyper-aggressive!
