On the bass I have the volume at 10, balance at noon, bass at noon, mid at 2, treble at 2. The mid on the eq seems very agressive to me. Im playing at church this morning. I'll report back with how that goes.

It's taking some getting used to going back to a 6 from a 4. It has the lowest action of any bass I've ever played. I'm still getting used to the preamp. It doesn't like my Zoom B2.

I played a rehearsal tonight with my SR1015 and I am not very happy with the pups/vari mid eq...not sure if I want to replace the pups and the eq or just the replace the eq first and go from there...it's frustrating...or wait until after NAMM and see whats new and go with a new one.

What's your amp and cab?

But I had a vari-mid that came in an SRT800dx, along with american EMGs. I hated the EMGs so I gutted and sold the electronics. But during the few months that I had that setup, the vari-mid was weird. I mean, it seems to be a solid pre-amp, but it just wasn't intuitive for me. One day I just sat there and slowly turned each knob, paying very close attention. The mid knobs especially, work in tandem. You can move one at a time, but you get the most out of it if you can come to understand their relation to eachother.
as far as the boomyness, it could be a limitation of your pickups. Or maybe a limitation of your cab. One thing I can say about the EMGs, their low end stayed crystal clear.

When I use the mids it just gets kind of a honkin tone..only way to describe it..I hope this helps.

I don' t use the B2 when playing at church, just direct into my JDI. Since my Amplug just crapped out, I'm looking at the EBS microbass.

Boomy sounds to me like undefined bass. So it does appear that you're on the right track to add mids, you're just not getting the right frequency that you want. Did someone say this model has vari-mid? If so, you should be able to put a gentle boost on the mids and then sweep through the frequencies to find one that fattens up your middle.
Also, don't forget that you can turn EQ down as well as up. So if you sound deep and thin, dial back both the bass and the treble while increasing the volume and that will bring the mids forward. Sometimes that works when all else fails.

I should relax and give it some more time and see how it goes. I really love the body and neck on this bass. It's a 97 got it for $300 at a GC..very clean.
