On another note, I just added a white NS-2A to my stable.
Thanks! And congrats on the ns2a! A white Spector with P/Js is on my list of basses to own before I kick the bucket.

not the music that i usually play, but it's fun to go out and play with friends.

Thanks Donny! That show was the first time I used the MXR live- both as a tone shaper and for some PA support. It's nice to have one, and the sound guy was pretty grateful. I can definitely see myself getting more live use out of it!

Hey guys. So it took me a while because I actually set up a little studio at my house, thought it would take a hour or two, ended up taking me most of the weekend.

I did a comparison recording of my NS-4 with the 35P and 35J pickups and the DC pickups.

Specs: Recorded with my USA NS-4 directly into Protools.
Fairly new Rotosound swing bass 66's on the bass (A little buzzy on the low string).
Volume all the way up, blend in the middle, EQ set flat on the 18 volt Haz.
Tuned to drop D.

Each recording is the same with 3 parts:
Fingers (Rage Against the Machine - Freedom Riff)
Slapping (a little riff I wrote)
Pick (Verse from The Pot- Tool)

Here is with the 35P in the front, 35J in the back.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/73814054/P-J.mp3

Here is with the 35P in the front, DC in the back.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/73814054/P-DC.mp3

Here is with both DC pickups (the way it came...)

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/73814054/DC's%20Direct.mp3

Let me know what you think....

Great samples!

I like all the combinations, I think that the bass sounds amazing due to all the other factors besides the pickups (including your playing)

If I had to choose one combination it would be the 35P and DC.
I could be more than happy with any of them though.

I prefer the 1st clip, w/the 35P in the front & the 35J in back.
This seems to have the fullest overall range & richest mids, & with a bit more preamp gain and some on-board bass & treble boost, I think the sound would work for me.
Which setup are you leaning towards?

Awesome man, thanks for doing that. They all sounded great but I liked the 35P and 35J for the clarity. Good grind but still and great bite with punchy clarity. My 2.

Weird, I grew up in the Fargo area, but lived and taught in Rochester for a year (like 2000-2001) until my wife and I got laid off, then we moved to Vegas. I will be there again in June with my dad, he has another appointment at Mayo .

Great town, Looking forward to visiting again, just wish it was under different circumstances.

Good luck with the bass, you can't go wrong with a NS-2A.

Thanks guys. I go back and forth I like the P and DC combo alot, but I also dig the 2 DC's. Through my SVT the DC in the back just has this bg thick presence that I lose with the J, the DC just sounds huge through my amp.

Hey all you Spector guys. I finally getting a chance to try out the Spector Legend 5 with haz copy pre in a band setting. It sounds pretty fricken awesome! The only tough thing about that is my other bass is passive and the volume difference when switching basses is tough to deal with. I've been cutting the main volume on the Spector to try to and match things. I've always been a passive bass guy and wonder if this takes away from the tone with an active bass? I haven't had enough time playing it live to tell much difference. Anything you guys do to deal with this other than buying a 4 string Spector? (which may happen anyway)

Usually amps have a -14 db switch for active basses.... You could also get an EQ pedal and up the volume out for when you use the passive bass

But I encourage buying another Spector
