This is also why I decided to put the BQC system into this faux Forte 5 instead of the OBP-2. I want to force myself to start exploring midrange usage more instead of just always curving it out. My ears aren't going to get any bigger without work, and I think the BQC being so broad in terms of mid frequency selection that while it might prove to be frustrating at first, I need to learn more about how I can use mids to shape my tone more effectively instead of just using the amp's eq to notch stuff in or out to suit the room. I don't know if using a preamp as a learning tool is necessarily what springs to mind when I think about pre amps, but I feel like I'm lacking in knowledge in this part of creating my tone and this can be a great way to teach myself how to get comfortable with using mids to find the right place in the mix. | I think it's all in the ear of the beholder. I find the BQC to be aggressive in its attack. For me the comparison would be around what frequencies are boosted by different preamps. I am sure not all preamps center their bass control on say 50 hertz right? Each preamp is different.
As far as headroom goes, the way I understand that is the more headroom you have, the clearer or more pure your tone will be? Now that's in laymans terms. The best comparison I can give is my amp set up. Using the Bergantino nv215 with the Thunderfunk 550b sounds really good.....when you turn it up it does what it is supposed to but at a certain point doesn't Seem louder, just more full....that's with 550 watts......send 1250 watts from the carvin b1500 to the same cab and it seems to get louder and have more fundamental and dynamic.
Now I realize in this comparison I used louder as a term of choice. I think this is how we see power and headroom in general. I think I can get great tone with a variety of different preamps through my various rigs. Also don't discount your hands or your amp and speakers......my two cents

Very powerful, completely new internal preamp with higher/hotter output and a much broader frequency range. Their tech told me they were going for the best qualities of passive pickups such as what I mentioned above along with greater transparency and "hearing more of the wood." But it also still has that slightly compressed, tight EMG signature but it'll jump out of the bass and rough you up; very sensitive to preamp eq'ing no matter who the manufacturer is. A little goes a long way with these pickups. They're really great in Spectors (which is where I honestly think EMGs sound the absolute best above all other basses that use them natively). But I think most things are good in Spectors. Like pancakes. And beautiful women. And most definitely root beer.
And Phat, thanks again for taking the time to explain so much of the functionality and intent behind powering on-board pre-amps. I learned a lot and that's what I was hoping for.

One is that red with upgraded EMG DCs and the BQC preamp, and the other is the natural with HZs and a non trim tone pump and the upgraded black euro bridge with intonation screws. If anyone is interested in either message me. I might consider trading both for a nice Spector four. The red is a 2001, while the natural is a 2003. I have a Spector hardshellL with the upgraded 2001.

I played 5-ers for almost four years, and they never did feel quite right to me. I rarely need anything lower than a low D, so I keep my white Euro in drop-D for the one set we have in that tuning. A nice Spector 4 should be a very satisfying addition to your toolbox.

In lue of the blowtorch pedal i cranked my TP to 60%... OMG perfection... almost eliminating my GAS for that pedal... almost. There is something special in this bass... my Rex 4 pro can't match it. This CRFM just growls.
Joe, I'm still loving this bass... you need to find me another one.. lol
We have been practicing at lower volumes for the past 2 weeks (no drummer and teaching a new guitarist the songs) so it was nice to just crank it up tonight... |

I crank up the high and low mids to get the growl I'm after. I generally run the bass flat or cut just a tad for more of a mid bump too. Quote:

I started on a four, but spent most of my formative time on a 5. Whenever I play a 4 I keep reaching for some of those low notes up in higher positions or wanting to move parts I come up with down an octave. I guess it's just what I'm used to.

Plus I'm lazy, I don't have to dance all over the neck with a 5.
If I ever had to go back to a 4 (can't imagine), I would string it BEAD. |
