I've been on a Maiden kick myself for the past few days. It's funny, I have a nice P Bass, but I have been using my Spectors because they do just sound better!

They started putting serial numbers on the control covers.
Serial numbers NS1xxx would be mid-late 1987
The production at the original Korean factory was from 1987 to 1989. They made around 2-3K per year.
Serial numbers NS8xxx would be 1989
So NS6xxx maybe 88ish.
In 1990 they temporarily switched factories, thus the Samick verison NS-2A's which have S ser# on the back of the headstock. (and less curve, bridge and knob placement)
FYI, NS-94/95, 2000, Q & Legend series are made at the original Korean factory that the 87-89 NS-2A's were made at. | Ok that explains why I never found a serial # on my NS-2A I got it in early '88 so it must have been made in '87-ish.

We play Maiden's "Wrathchild", and I use my plum CRFM for that song - the NS-4 sounds a bit too sterile & hi-fi for the Maiden. Gotta have that P-Bass pup somewhere in the equation!

If I bring my 3 Spectors, it makes transitioning from bass to bass easier for both me and the soundman - no messing with the gain control on the amp or board to try & balance the output of a passive bass vs. an active bass.
I used to haul 6 or 7 basses to gigs, but the 'ol back ain't what it used to be, and I get 90% of the sounds I need from just my Spectors.
Still, the 4003 & Jazz basses come out to play occasionally....

Hard to believe so few were made, these things are so popular now, Mine is my fav bass right now, more so than my NS20004/NS20005 sisters (both made in '99)

I'd have to judge that in person for myself but I don't doubt those who have been exposed to both models.
If I saw a black or white Kramer-era NS-2 like the ones listed above I'd probably bite even though my wallet is already crying this year. |
