Happy Turkeyday! | As the guys already said it's personal preference. But there're some common hints that can also help. One of them is:
when you press the E string on the first and the last fret the distance between the bottom of the E string and the top of 9th fret should be around the thikness of average credit card. And this is very easy way to check, all you need is a bass, a credit card and...somebody else's hand to hold the card when you press the string with your hands But again, it depends on your playing style and how accurate the fretwork of the actual bass is.

The first fret on a Spector is always set a little higher.
So used the second fret and 24th fret as your reference.

I tend to dig in when I play so just had to tweak the truss rod ever so slightly and raise the E a tiny bit. Playin like butta now! Got a post-thanksgiving gig tomorrow night! I'll post up pics when I get a chance on sunday. Also check out this rig, pretty sure they don't sell this Hartke anymore(at least on the big retail sites) but it's mean. Only got the volume set on two, everything else flat and its ridiculous.

And it's actually on a very playable place - string E fret 5....damn it... not that it's completely dead but it resonates worse than the other notes and it's volume is lower than the other fretted notes on E. Anybody heard of that with Spectors before?

As strange as this may sound, sometimes certain rooms choke off some notes. For instance if I practice in my bedroom, anytime I hit a D the note seems to die out quicker, and a few handles on my dresser rattle. Any other room in my house and it all sounds fine. |

Any other room in my house and it all sounds fine. | I actually started to notice it when I played it unplugged. The E string resonates thunderously to your body on 1,2,3 frets, less on 4 fret and the worst is on 5th. Than it a sort of starts to recover on 6th and than sounds way better on 7th. Than I plugged in and played with different volumes but still recognized that the E fretted on 5th sounds weaker than than the other Strings on 5th and the E on other frets.
It's very unusual place for deadspot as it mostly happens with G string on 6-7th frets on bolt-ons afaik. I've never had it on any of my neck-thrus'...

If the core of the string gets twisted you'll get all sorts of weird things like dead spots, double harmonics and the like. If you take the string off and it spins or twists like it was a rubber band that had been twisted and let go of, then you know it's not the bass.
Dead spots come from a situation where the wood of the neck resonates at the same frequency of the note, which causes a cancellation of vibration energy and thus a note with no sustain.
It's very uncommon for the E string to have dead notes.
So my first guess would be a twisted string core. The next guess is if you forgot to stretch the strings after putting them on.
My last guess would be that something about these strings makes them resonate at the same frequency as the note you're playing, so you may need to try a different gauge string.
