I also don't have a bass 'business'..I get things that I want to try and I play them for a minute or two....if they do not work for me, I sell them. I am not about games.
I have no desire to offer distrust or take advantage of any one on this board. I came here for the same reasons we all do, to talk basses...I get excited about basses and I love to play them. Like most things, I do not get attached to them because I cannot take them with me. If that is sales tactics maybe I am missing something...I do not mislead or intend to mislead anyone and my comment above was me saying maybe the other Jamie was interested as he had mentioned it to me this morning before I even got on TB.
if I am taking advantage of someone's trust, someone tell me because that is not what I am about. |

I have a question to those who have refinished their Spectors before.
How tough is it to get off the original finish of a Spector?
I am purchasing a Spector Legend 4 Fretless next week and I'm not a fan of the color/finish of it. The Legend fretless only comes in the Black Cherry finish.
This will be my first fretless after playing fretted Basses for over 20 years. I also wanted a project Bass to work on so I decided to get the Legend and Strip the finish and refinish the body natural with Tung-Oil, add a Tone-Pump and EMG 35P & 35J to it. I know how to apply Tung-Oil to a freshly sanded body but I have never stripped paint off one. I know some of you have refinished a couple of Rebops that look great! I just want to strip the paint the the best way as to not do any harm to the quilted top. Plus I have no idea how thick the paint is or the Quilt top for that matter.
Any advice would be much appreciated
-Curtis

-Curtis | My refin was an oil finish, so I'm afraid I can't help you w a comparison. I'd assume it is similar to other guitars and basses and nothing out of the ordinary (not including nitro, matte, and other types).

-Curtis | I'm starting to work on one now, but the top is covered with bondo and the entire bass has been repainted. underneath all but the top is the factory finish, so it's all coming off. In my situation the only option I have is sanding.

JPS...that is a very interesting life fact about Kramer that I did not know on the NS-2C's. Good to know and thank you for sharing that it'd bit!
Are these more like between a Legend and a NS-2A?

-Curtis | The finishes come off pretty easy. Just start with 280 and go up to 1600. You just have to make sure that any sanding marks are out because as the oil darkens the wood you will see the marks from the sand paper. Take your time and hand sand off the finish.

Are these more like between a Legend and a NS-2A? | Really they are the same quality as an NS-2A. Just not neck thru, no curved body and passive pups... I'd put them more in a place their own.
Legends are nicer by far. Just because they're curved, have modern electronics. Better pickups.

Sanding sounds fine to me. I would be really sketchy about using a chemical stripper or heat gun anyway.

In my visits and discussions with Jaymi, I have never felt like he was misleading or trying to take advantage of anyone.
Honestly, I wouldn't hesitate to buy from Jaymi. He has always been honest with me and I value his opinions/input when it comes to any potential buys that I am considering!!
just my $0.02!

-Curtis | I watched a buddy refinish an older fender. He worked in a cabinet shop at the time and he was in the finish dept. The best thing that worked to start with to get that thick gloss finish and paint at the same time was using one of those paint peeling heat guns. Making sure that you constantly move it over one small area at a time, if you don't keep moving the heat gun it'll scorch the wood, it lifts the finish/paint from the wood and use a putty knife/scraper to slowly lift the heated paint/finish. Doesn't take long, shorter time than striping gel or sanding. Once the paint/finish is removed there will be some light sanding to be done.

This is what a buddy of mine suggested when I was refinishing my old Peavey Fury. ...oddly enough, he also worked in a cabinet shop!
