Both are dead stock and about the same age (the USA is a 2010 and the Euro is a 2008). Here's some pics...
USA NS-2J special edition #10 of 14 made
Euro 4LX Poplar Burl neck thru
The build quality on both is fantastic. The set up and feel is slightly better on the USA. The Tonal difference is staggering. The USA has a JJ layout and Aguilar OBP-3 preamp, the Euro has a PJ layout and non-trim tonepump. The USA has much better balance across the strings and a much more usable tonal range and volume. The Euro has a little less bottom end (interesting considering the precision pickup) and less usable top end with too much shimmer at the top for my tastes. The USA is an all walnut bass with a pf fretboard and the Euro is a poplar/mahogany body with a rosewood fb.
I will be changing out the preamp in the Euro to either a 9volt USA preamp or an 18 volt Aguilar OBP-2 preamp. I think with that change the two basses would be very comparable. A new Euro 4LX with tonepump will run you between $2000 and $2500 (about half that or less used) and the USA bolt on will run about $200 to $500 more new but much harder to find used.
I specifically wanted the bolt on because I think it sounds best with Jazz pickups (a little more old school) which was the pu configuration I was after at the time. My Spector Rex5 pro has dual humbuckers and a BT preamp with neck thru construction and it also sounds much better than the Euro to me. Tons of growl and lowend and again usable highs. Here's a pic of the Rex5...
In hind sight, maybe I'm just not a non-trim tonepump kinda guy. |

Will post some sound clips a bit later. | Lima - Breathtaking bass! That redwood top looks like it's on fire. Spector's choice of a walnut body with the jazz pickups is a fantastic combo. I'm sure you're lovin it right now. Congrats on the SNBD. |
