Spray Paint?

I have an old squier p bass and I would like to change the color.

Has anyone just painted over the old paint?

I was thinking about priming and then painting, then finishing it off with a coat of lacquer.

Anyone done this?

Works just fine. I recommend a good block sanding to make sure everything is flat. Even poly can shrink some over time. Sand the poly smooth up to 320 grit and you are good to go. Prime, paint, and clear.

You can, but you'll need to sand the gloss off the body before you spray the primer. Check out Reranch.com for tips on how to go through the process. I recently refinished a Squier with great results using their tutorial.

A friend of mine sent a body of a bass to his brother's auto body shop and them refinish it. The bass came out great.

I looked into that. The cost was a little too high. Worth more than the bass.

Had a friend who owned a body shop, did a great job and cheap. He'd never shot a bass before and wanted the opportunity.

When I was a kid I'd just break out a can of Krylon, LOL. Instant paint job.

Is the bass heavy or light?
You're going to add quite a few ounces by spraying over top of an existing finish.
If the bass is heavy, I'd recommend stripping it down to the wood, level it out, prime & then paint.
