Size: 85.4 KBI love these basses. I modified mine by adding ultra jazz 5's an aguilar preamp, then gave it a black matte finish and some funky images. Named it Soul power

Do the Ultra Jazz 5's fit into that bass without any routing or modification?

just a slight amount actually. guitar center wanted to charge 80 bucks, so I just took a box cutter and trimmed on each side a bit and there it was.

Just picked up one this weekend. I am in agreement on the general consensus that the pre is a bit tame. I was looking at the obp3, with the vol, bl, mid p/p, tr bs st, a/p switch. I don't really care for the slap switch eq, and I think an active/passive switch might be more usefull.
I might try the stock pups with this 1st.
Nords j5 and ultra jazz seem to be the most common pup choice for this thing, but I wonder what the fender noiseless or N3s would do for it.
Any insight into the tone differences typical for your various options? I would like an aggressive growl that sounds like a modern take on the jazz vintage.

I one of mine I have Seymour Duncan SJB-5s (they drop in) with Aguilar OBP-3 with mid switch. Nice set up and slap monster!

Wow -- 5 years later, this thread still delivers!

Fender definitely hit a home run with these basses.

How much effect did the pre have vs the pickups? Did you change it all out at once?

changed it all at once. The combo just woke the bass up and elevated in to a whole new level. i can get nice compressed modern slap tone or get some growl and grind out of it. Definitely worth it. I think the SD pickups are under rated. I dont see many using them. The Aquilar is a great pre. My other one has Nordstrand FatStacks and a Bass Mods BEQ12 pre. A whole other beast !! its like a top fuel dragster waiting to unleash loads of power. Thats my workhorse I uses for every gig right now.

Red face

Okay - as previously mentioned just picked up a white one and wow. I remember now why I was so impressed when I owned one of these a few years ago. I actually really like the stock pickups and pre.
Speaking of which am I right in remembering the pickups and pre are based on EMGs? Can anyone confirm this. Ill post pics soon.

No way is the preamp standard EMG fare. It doesn't physically resemble any EMG product, and sounds very noisy and brittle compared to an EMG tone control module, especially when the treble is pushed.

Given that the sensing area is too narrow for the string width, I'm pretty sure that EMG wasn't involved in pickup design or selection, either. Depending on the neck alignment, it's common for either the G or the B string to be a little weak. It was the B on mine.

These would be great little basses at any price, but the electronics are the weak point.

I got my obp3 this week. I'm going to try this with the stock pups for now. I am considering area j's if I'm still not satisfied. That slap switch is just silly to me. I am making it an active/passive switch.

I also own one of the active Squiers, rescued from a GC. The only mods I made were to swap the stock roundwound strings for a set of GHS flats. The tonal change was startling, and I was able to get the action down nice and low.

FYI: most of these active Squiers were built in Indonesia at the Cort factory, so the quality inside and out is quite good. You'd be hard pressed to find an instrument of similar quality at the same price point.

My bad - I just recall someone saying they thought the pickups and electronics were based on EMG (not designed with).
I have to admit the stock tone for me is perfect. I guess one mans trash is another's treasure! Can't hear any difference between strings tonally.
The reason I ask is that for the last few years my only bass has been a modified Frank Bello sig Fender with Dimarzio PJs. I liked the tone at the time but the Squier has got me back to liking modern sounding pickups and preamp. To this end could anyone on here recommend a PJ set that I could replace my Dimarzios with that would come close to the tone of the Squier? I thought an active EMG set might do it, SD maybe? I don't ever use onboard controls on basses so I will be using flat settings (as is on the Squier). I fear that if I cant find a pickup set that does the trick for me I might sell mine to purchase a 4 string!
This is the second ADJV I've owned and both were incredibly easy to set up with very low action. Somehow Squier hit the mark with these guys. For me the only failing is the basswood body and big vintage tuners = neck dive, but with some Hipshot Ultralites and a few fishing sinkers in the control cavity I have to admnit this is my ideal bass!

Popping in my obp3 2 nite. Got it from best bass gear pre assembled. Only issue is the pots are a tiny bit wider diameter so I will have to bust out the drill.

I bought one of these basses two weeks ago. I wanted a bass that I could fly with and not have to worry about (should the baggage handlers decide to have their way with my instrument). Squier was the first name to come to mind. I actually had a different model in mind when I went down to the local store to see what Squiers they had in stock. After plugging in the Deluxe and playing for only a few seconds I was sold. The bass was set up perfectly. Just the right amount of relief, no fret buzz, even tone up and down the fingerboard, perfect action and the tightest neck pocket this side of a Sadowsky. AND it sounded really good. I should also mention that mine balances perfectly on a strap (no neck dive whatsoever). A great bass for the price.

Killing time in my local music store last weekend and they had an Active Jazz V on the rack so I figured what the heck, lets see what all the hoopla is about.

Plugged it into a Mesa Walkabout Combo & I'll admit to being pretty blown away with the sounds I got out of it.

I also tried a MIM P and a Dingwall Combustion they had hanging there. I own a Combustion and did prefer the sound of it (by a slight margin), didn't like the P at all but I would have bought the Squier in a flash if I wasn't already set with a nice back up.

Typical of most basses on the wall it needed a bit of a set up to my preferences but was quite playable with the factory set up.

I haven't played a Fender I liked since I sold my Lyte. I can certainly see why there is a lot of love for these and may pick one up yet.

Hey guys, does anybody knows if the pickup with the green wire goes on the bridge or on the neck position?
I removed the pickups and donīt remember which pickup goes on the bridge.
Thanks.
