Recently went to my local music store and played everything Fender and Squier they had. The best bass for me was a CV Squier. One thing you need to be aware of is that at least at the store I go to, the instruments aren't set up very well. That said, the state of the setup is at least as important as the type of bass....if the setup is bad, a great bass plays just like a junker.

I have a similar experience. PLayed everything from MIA Standard Jazz down to Squier VM 77 (Which I own). So far the one "I" liked best was a 2011 MIM Jazz. Now, granted, it had a maple fretboard (prefered), but it sounded better than some of the MIA's. My biggest gripe with the MIA's I played...the neck...it just felt...well...out of place in my hand. I prefer the thinner necks of the Squier VM's. And the MIM felt really nice.
The 198-something MIM I played was just miserable. The BEST I have tried....1962 Jazz, not a reissue or relic, but a real 1962. That thing was just so awesome. BUT--WAY out of my budget.
My advise...go and play everything you can get your hands on and YOU make the determination as to YOUR NEXT BASS!!!!
