Squier HM Bass, anyone have one (besides me)?

Searched the thread titles--no luck. I can't possibly be the only goofus who has one of these, plays it more often than any of my "good" basses, and use it at more gigs than I probably should. After all, it has about the goofy-est looking pointy head stock ever made...

Made in Korea, late 80's--87, 88, probably the first year of the Korean made Squier, Japanese in quality, great neck, super lite, P&J configuration, sounds killer. Bought it by accident (grainy e-bay photo), but did I get lucky.

Anyone else ever had one, seen one?

Whattaya know, there is another one out there. I think you have one, the goofy angled headstock is the giveaway.

You ever play it much? I still play mine more than most of my other basses. It sounds and plays like a Fender, and is super lite.

Just sold a HM on Ebay for just over £100 ($195). I think the buyer got a bargain. Thought it was a great bass for the price, excellent neck, and loved the looks (similar headstock design to both my L'arrivee and Carvin). If I had the room, I definitely would have kept it.

Yes. I would say that was a bargain. I just gigged with mine again this weekend and remembered why I like this cheapo bass so much--super lite, sounds like a Fender, and as you said has a great neck.

Nice bass! Mine is black, but I sure like the looks of your former bass better. I'm still baffled by the headstock design, but at least it tilts back.

Yeah, it looks great in any colour. I would certainly get one again if one came up on Evilbay. I am a devotee of the pointy headstocks (Larrivee, Carvin and now Charvel!). I don't know why, they just do something for me (as well as sounding good, and playing well, of course).

I also like that there don't seem to be many of them around compared to the roundnose headstocks.

I have one of these bad boys... I have had it since 1989....

its got such a sweet sound..

mine is a little battered, but it has been well gigged/toured etc, I spruced it up with a hand made walnut scratchplate in around 1991, so its now pretty unique..

I have never seen these on sale anywhere, apart from that one on Ebay (which you sold for £100) - man.. You should have got so much more for it than that due to it's rarity.. They didn't make all that many and they weren't around for long. I believe they are japanese components, assembled in Korea. Very solid... I paid £200 for it new in '89 so it wasn't exactly the cheapest bass on the market... At that time you could get a Mexican precision for around £50 more. Despite the fact it is a squier.. It is a very good one.. .

I wouldn't part with mine for less than £300 now..

The neck is the narrowest of any bass I have seen (apart from handmade ones) and even fender Jazz basses have a wider neck.

It sure sounds chunky... Ideal for Rage Against The Machine style funk metal... I use mine mainly for studio work as I am predominantly a guitarist now. But it is the best bass I have ever owned.. Including more expensive ones I have.

I wouldn't part with it. It has such sentimental value now..

If anyone wants pics, then mail me... Like I say, these basses are so damn rare now.

Nice bass. That has always been my thought, as well--MIJ components assembled in Korea. No way the Koreans could have come up with the perfect fit and finish and great P/U's these have the first year these Squiers were moved to Korea, in my (very unqualified) opinion/best guess. If anyone knows differently, please post it.

I have one of these, a 5-string in blue. I like it because of the rarity and 80's look. It sounds good, has no buckle rash, and the frets and fretboard are still in pretty good shape. The strings are a bit close for my clumsy style of playing, though.

If anyone is interested, I might be willing to part with it since it's mostly just taking up space on the wall. I thought about ebay, but would rather sell it to someone who I know will appreciate it. I'll try to get some pics up soon.

I have two now. A four string and a five string. Both blue. They were both made in 1989.
Neat bassses and sleepers in my opinion. Good build quality,thin necks, good sound and nice sustain thanks to their badass type bridges. I've started calling them "the blues".
